Who have you seen perform the role live and who's your favorite?

I first saw Valerie Perri in a regional production back in 1996. To date, she is my favorite live Eva. Incredible voice and powerful acting. I had the pleasure of seeing her once more in another regional production back in 2000. I wish she'd do the role again.

Other actresses I've seen do the role live include Natalie Toro and Maria Andricain (20th Ann. tour), Bets Malone (San Gabriel Civic Light Opera), and some chick I hardly remember (Covina Valley Playhouse). Natalie was shrill and looked wrong for the role, but Bets was very good. Though nobody was as wonderful as Valerie. <3

Here's her official site...

Post subject:  Favorite Evitas

Ok, so I admit, I'm a huge Evita nerd. Have seen it a million times (the original production...I'm old!). Let's see if I can remember them all...I'm sure I'm leaving some out:

Loni Ackerman, Derin Altay, Valerie Perri, Florence Lacey (original Los Angeles production)

Stephanie Lawrence, Siobhan McCarthy, Jacquey Chappell, Kathryn Evans (original London production)

Donna Marie Elio (now Asbury) on tour

Natalie Toro, Ana Maria Andracain (20th anniversary tour)

Kathy Voytko (25th anniversary tour)

My all time favorite is definitely Siobhan McCarthy (who was the original Mistress when Elaine Paige played Eva). She came back to the show a couple of years into the run (she was like 24 years old) and was sensational. Great actress, distinctive voice, movie-star looks (think of a young but much more gorgeous Bette Davis) and loads of attitude. She did have a very strong Irish accent in those days, though it didn't bother me.

She went on to be the original Donna in "Mamma Mia" besides doing lots of other shows in London (Superstar, Les Miz, Blood Brothers, Chess). I still don't know why she isn't more famous.

Every one of those original-production ladies was wonderful in her way, especially Stephanie Lawrence, who sadly passed away a few years back at the age of 50.

The newer Evas (Toro, Andracain, Voytko) did not live up to my memories of the first-generation actresses. They lacked the vocal chops (though they were by no means bad) and really missed the fire and energy of the role.

Donna Marie Elio was only 22 when I saw her, and these days, she'd be just about the right age to do the show again. Someone should cast her as Evita soon :)

Thanks for going down memory lane with me.

PS: I had the good fortune to share the stage with some fabulous Evitas in regional theatre in the mid to late 80s. Julie Waldman and Julie Dixon Jackson. They were fabulous too! :)

I really enjoyed Malia Tippets on the Nayional Tour. Her voice was so powerful and wonderful. I got to meet her after the show and was very nice. She signed my programme and gave me a hug.

My favorite stage Eva is still Valerie Perri.

I received an audio of the opening night of the 1st U.S. national tour in Chicago with John Herrera (saw him opposite Valerie as Che as well and he was amazing) and even though the sound is muffled as hell, it's nice. Only thing that surprised me is that Valerie doesn't quite sound like herself--she sounds very "shaky" (opening night jitters?) and her voice sounds deeper (could be the tape quality). What a pity. I would've loved to have a full, clear recording of her performance to share with people who haven't seen her but this recording doesn't do her justice.

At any rate, I had a chance to see her in Man of La Mancha at the Freud Playhouse last year but couldn't make it out for the matinee (she was alternate Aldonza). She remains busy with concert performances and I might drive out to her next one next month.

Think she's too old to play Eva again? I have no idea how old she is but she appears to be in her early 40's in the pics on her site. She needs to play that role again someday!!
