I live in a community so conservative that we could never do Damn Yankees simply because it has a swear word in the title, mild as it may be. Has anybody had an experience like that where someone complained about the title?

One of my principals didn't want our school to do Urinetown once because of the title.

Urinetown should never be done, period (and not becasue of the title).

Oh, pish. There are shows that shouldn't be done, but Urinetown isn't one of them. It's got some very enjoyable stylistic elements, and even the stuff that I don't really enjoy is interesting.

Anyway -- I think the title worries should be a non-bother. "Damn" in the title is meant in the literal sense of the word -- as it's used in, for instance, the bible. It's not (simply) a pejoritive or (very mild) obscenity.

I just don't like musicals that call attention to themselves. That's why the 'plot' is so flimsy; it's less about the story and characters as it is about making fun of a very specific type of musicals. And if I were to see a production of Urinetown without knowing the ending beforehand, I would ask for a refund.

It's a good thing you don't dislike sappy HAPPY endings or you'd be spending half your life waiting for rebates.

If your community is having problems with the title, you might point them to the UK release of the film, which re-titled the picture due to similar mores (and also partly due to the fact that the joke was lost on non-U.S. citizens), re-naming it Whatever Lola Wants.
