Post I'm a little bit worried
So I am in a community theatre production of Company, and I play David. I am so worried that my scene (the one where we get high) will fall flat. Will a community theatre crown in small town Iowa laugh at this scene or will they just be uncomfortable? There is nothing worse than being on stage and getting no response to something that's supposed to be funny.

Also my character makes the joke in Side by Side about the Seagrams building. Can anyone explain this?

I hate to think that the parts that are supposed to be funny will be uncomfortable or the 'joke' will go right over the audiences head.

The bit about the Seagram's Building just came up for discussion here recently:

When I saw the 5th Avenue Theatre's very good production last fall, that line only got a couple of chuckles...I guess it was too much of a local NYC reference. I admit I didn't get it because I assumed it was a generational reference.

As for the pot scene...I guess you'd know the local audience better than I would. I saw the show on two consecutive nights in Seattle. One night, I sensed the audience wasn't amused and was a little disapproving. The next, it got a lot of laughs.

the pot scene usually gets great laughs..as long as Jenny performs her role correctly. it all hinges on her performance.

In the production I saw, that scene got a lot of laughs, but it depends on the audience...
