Post subject:  Why Do Cinderella?

This will be the first in a series of threads discussing reasons to mount productions of various shows in this day and age. First we have Cinderella. I'm having the hardest time determining why to do this show now. To many people it's fluff, and while it has its moments, it's far from R&H's best score. So, I wanna hear from you guys: Why do Cinderella?

Because it's an easy show to do, especially for high schools.
The fact that the cast is female-heavy helps as well.
The songs are easy to learn and fairly catchy.
It's a recognizable name and will draw a sizable audience, especially from a younger age group as well as an older one.

as a crowd pleaser so parents can bring their children so you can raise money to do some deeper stuff like Brecht, Shaw or Ionesco later in your season.

When I did Cinderella, it was for a charity. It ended up making a ton of money because we had some amazing local actors that drew people in to see it, and people recognized the name and brought their kids and grand kids.

While the show to me is fluff, sometimes fluff is a good thing. It will make you money (especially when you're a non-profit organization), it's already known and fun for the audience, and it can draw in a huge crowd. The show is very light and it makes the people who see it smile and sing along. Sometimes that's all that's needed for a successful show. :)
