Yes it is possible. A high school in my area did it with a female. It is not nearly as impressive, or comical, with a female. If you plan on directing it in the future I would highly recomend casting a male, if possible, as this role!!

When I saw it in Norway, it was very clear that the role was played by a man in drag, so noone got surprised when the wig was pulled off to reveil it was a man.

Turns out the actor playing Mary Sunshine actually was a woman playing a man playing a woman.

It was very clever.
