One of the best recent movie-musicals, imo.

Only thing missing is "Class", but it didn't fit the director's vision, which worked well, though.

Definitely the best movie musical to come out since 2000.
Sweeney Todd comes close, but Chicago is really an amazing movie.

Well I feel the opposite, but at the least we can agree they are both great :P.

The film of Chicago is great. It takes the idea that is inherent in the material and makes it work for film. For those reasons, it is better than the film version of Sweeney Todd as both a film and an adaptation. Sweeney Todd, although I like a lot about the film, suffers a little from Tim-Burtonitis in both its adaptation and filming.

Post Burton
Pretty much. He reduces Sweeney Todd from a masterwork to just another Tim Burton movie - albeit one with a stronger narrative drive and greater cohesion than usual. The film offers only the melodrama and horror of the stage show and none of the tragic elements. Such a pity really, since its that which separates Sondheim's Sweeney Todd from other adaptations of the legend. For me, it's as if Burton and screenwriter John Logan missed the point of it. Some of the casting doesn't help either.
