Post subject:  Why "Modernize" Chess?

This is doing my head in and I need help understanding it.

I have encountered a director who is dead set keen on "modernizing" Chess.

Doesn't want any 70's or 80's references. Doesn't want dates mentioned on stage. Wants modern clothes and fashions and so on.

Ah.. Is that even possible in Chess? How can the Soviet Union be a major influence on a story decades after it's collapse? Do we rewrite the show? Rewrite history?

How can a story and characters driven by Cold War tension have any oomph without being set in the Cold War?

What about all the inaccuracies and downright continuity errors that would create?

Like I said.. I am struggling to grasp the thought process here..What do the general Chess loving public think?

Any help in understanding this mess gratefully accepted.

The only help that comes to mind:

Your director's a nut. Do what you gotta do, get it over with, and get out of there.

You know what Marvin? I had just come to that very conclusion.

Hearing it from an outside source as well makes me feel a lot better about things. Thanks!

I think it falls into the category of "Let's just go along for the ride and have fun with my friends."

At least the aftershow party will be a blast.

I've toyed with a futuristic version of Chess before, but yeah, an out-and-out modernization doesn't make much sense. Especially since there's (to my knowledge) not a lot of reason for a Russian to defect in the modern political climate nowadays.
