Post subject:  SETS?!?!

Can Someone explain the different sets in this show? They seem pretty cool.(like how the house works, and how they jump into the painting, things like that)? THANKS!

They dont jump into a painting, thats just a movie thing. However they do go to the park, but instead of animated penguins, the statues in the park come to life.

Also, Supercali... is not set at an animated horse race, its in a shop where you can buy words and letters!

And, boy, is the effect tacky: an idea that seems great on paper plays little better than children's theatre in practice, and this on the world's most prominent musical theatre stages worldwide! I still can't figure out what exactly makes this choice not work as well as it should: is it the awful puns, the costumes, the choreography?

I do love the counterpoint that was created for the song though. It's one of the few completely pleasing additions to the score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, although way that the song is structured makes it seem like forever until we get to the final thrilling choruses of the number.

The house: basically it works kind of like a pop up book or dollhouse. The first time, it opens out from the center, and the audience sees the living room/hallway/stairs to the rest of the house.

When we go into the nursery, the house is taken off and the nursery, the topmost part of the hose comes down from the flies. In the Broadway production, the roof over the nursery is more 3 dimensional, but in the Nat'l tour it is 2d. I disagree that the "Jolly Holiday" effect/set is tacky. I liked it.

Everything in the picture is pretty much the same between the Broadway and Nat'l Tour. Except the buggies that Jane and Michael ride in are not used. (At least they weren't in the show that I saw. I could be wrong.:shifty: )

Then there is the bank. It's got a slanted design that is really interesting. There are two pillars on the left and right that show silhouettes of workers at their desks.
It's basically a black and white set piece. Probably to symbolize the strictness of the adult world.

One of my faves is the above: The rooftops of London. It's really cool. This scene includes several smokestacks and chimney's onstage that move around to change the setting. The scrim is my favorite part because of the billows of smoke that are either woven into the scrim or painted on. I can't tell.

I liked Jolly Holiday too, I thought it was great! :)

And no in the London and UK Tours, Jane and Michael didn't come on in those two prams (not buggies) either.

Fine. Why? What elements of the effect are not tacky? Which are tasteful and/or elegant?

The whole problem really is that the effect doesn't seem magical at all. There's no sense of illusion or wonder. It's hard suspend one's disbelief and buy into the sequence when most of the characters looks like a bunch of painted people dancing around in their underpants. It would be fine if these were buskers. It might even make a super effect in a piece of children's theatre. In a full scale Broadway musical whose target audience is wider than 4-9 year olds? No thanks, not good enough. Try again, please.

The magic is in that Mary has changed what starts as a very dull, grey and dark day (and indeed life) into a bright, colorful and whimsical one.

I personally love the effect, as do my friends and family, but each to their own.

What sort of effect would you have liked to have seen instead of the current park scene?

And the only way that Disney Theatricals could make this happen was by shoving in a bunch of statues with tacky costumes, terrible puns and awkward generic choreography? The song is great, the idea behind the number is fine and the way in which the humans are handled works all right - but the execution of the statues is completely cringe-worthy. It's gauche, not whimsical. The moments when the statues come to life are so ridiculous as to be laughable and the scene that follows with Michael and Jane and Nelius is even worse.

One that is creatively executed and actually appears magical so that the rest of the number wouldn't basically have to compensate for the shortcomings of the idea to make those silly statues come to life. It's like an idea that escaped from a one of those Disney Junior musicals somehow ended up in the real thing.

Remember in the film it was cartoon penguins, so I guess they wanted something bright and toonish, but what would YOU do? I dont mean what sort of thing, I mean give me an idea...

I don't know what I'd do and, even if I did, it's irrelevant: the point is that the choice doesn't make the moment work as well as it should and that I'm certain just about anything could work better. Tell you what: I shall have a think about it and let you know if I come up with anything.

I've said this on here before but the statue sequence made me feel very uncomfortable. I was actually offended to be honest and if you know anything about me, you'll know I'm so far from being a prude, it's not even funny.

I just really thought the grossly protruding genitalia and choreography which only seemed to want to highlight these parts of the human anatomy was highly inappropriate. It made my face throb with embarrassment, to say the least. I wanted it to end ASAP but it dragged and when more statues came out doing the same horribly stereotypically effeminate, tacky choreography, I just about *died*.
