Take Seussical, for example. Horton is the lead... so the actor would be sore as can be if he had to walk on all fours for two and a half hours every night. So they used their imaginations and gave him a simple costume, leaving it up to the audience to imagine what the elephant actually looks like.

We could get into a discussion now about how disparate the styles of Seussical and Tarzan are and that this type of costuming in the former would not be suitable in the latter. But I assume we are all aware of this fact.

I never got a chance to see the show sadly (since I personally enjoy a majority of the soundtrack) but when listening through the cd my first time around I didn't even realized Tantor was missing until the end. Completely escaped my mind.
I think he could have easilly been a Horton type maybe with a small prostatic nose perhaps. But there are a lot more complications with costume decisions with the costume through out the musical. It is sad he couldn't make it in though. ...I don't know, I never liked him that much so heh. But I do think he should have stayed.

I was extemely disappointed about Terk being a boy the minute I found out. It was a huge turn off for me. But after listening to the music, I do like the kind of guy Terk is, and Who Better is my favorite song in the show.
No offense to Chester or his fans, because I like his voice and everything, as well as his behavior on stage. I just think Terk should have been shorter. More of- closer to the movie, besides the gender. Short but holding on to as much authority (she) he could. In here he's just more dominate all together.
Also I don't like that he doesn't age, as- in the movie Terk grows with Tarzan.

Surely every character in the show ages at least as much as Tarzan does?

I understand what you mean though; you're disappointed that the characters don't grow up together. It doesn't bother me: I don't think the story loses anything by having Terk appear older. It's still clear that he's in a different generation when compared to Kerchak and it really does allow the pair of character to develop an older brother-younger brother relationship.

This thread makes me laugh. Luc, you're just like bitching at everybody for no reason. Haha.

On topic: I can't really see Tantor working at all in the musical, even with the Horton in Seussical thing. But hey, what do I know?

You're right, and I agree with you: it wouldn't work. Tantor's presence was contrived enough in the film; his disappearance is certainly a step up.

I think one of the big reasons to change Terk back to a boy is because he's a guy in Edgar Rice Burrough's original novel.
