Zombie Prom

Has anyone heard of this musical? Can someone tell me a bit more about it?

That may help you out some. It's got a lot of info about the show, cast, etc. Very Happy

Thank you. That was really helpful, but I want people opinions. What do you guys think about the music? Is it a quality musical? Do audiences tend to enjoy it? I'm looking for possible musicals for my high school-aged theatre group to do this fall and next summer.

Ooh I see...sorry, I misunderstood ya.

From what I gather, it's pretty good. I haven't seen it onstage or anything, but based on the music, it's almost like Bat Boy/Rocky Horror/LSOH-ish... unfortunately though, I don't think it's as "well known" as Rocky Horror or LSOH... so I'm not sure if it would attract a large amount of people. Confused

ARGH! Okay, I had a big long response to this all typed out, when suddenly my computer decided to spontaneously shut down Internet Explorer, and all was lost. d'oh!

Well I don't feel like re-typing EVERYTHING, but here's basically what I said--It really depends on your group as to whether this show would be right for you. Personally, I like it a lot, and the tech stuff would be reasonably simple: the characters wear mostly the same things, except for the prom at the end; I think the set could be reasonably simple; the only difficult makeup would be the zombie; etc. As far as cast size, it's pretty small, but I guess if you wanted you could have a sort of a "teen chorus" to hang out with the named teen roles. Certain scenes and musical numbers could definitely be expanded to include more people. Hm... (*trying to think of what else you might need/want to know*)... The songs aren't too difficult, though Johnny does hit some high notes but I doubt it would be a problem. But it's very catchy 50's/60's-sounding music, usually sort of a hit-or-miss, similar to Grease or Hairspray in the sense that you either love it or hate it. But most people seem to enjoy it, though it's definitely not a very well-known show, so I agree that you might not attract the biggest audiences. Ooh, and I believe the pit orchestra may be different from your average show... I know it requires an electric guitar, but beyond that but I'm not too sure, sorry; maybe you'd have to look into that.

There also may be a problem if your theater group tends to be strict about inappropriate topics in a show. There's very little swearing, but there are many sexual references. There's a song, "Exposé," in which the teacher and her old high school love sing together about some of their experiences in school, and it's basically about sex--with a lot of implications, double-entendres, etc (and he says "breast"! Shocked Lol). Also, there is the issue that the teacher ends up being Johnny's mother, so the audience knows that she was an unwed teenage mother and all that... That's only slightly more offensive than Lady Larken's pregnancy in OUaM, except that the description in this show is a bit more graphic ("five minutes of sweaty, sordid paradise" or something like that). AND there is the fact that Johnny commits suicide... Suicide = usually not good material for a youth show.

Don't get me wrong; I adore the show and I'd love to do it at my school (and I don't think my school would have a problem with it). It's very lighthearted and humorous, none of the "offensive" things are done distastefully, in my opinion. So truly, it just depends on whether or not your group would disapprove of the storylines.

Umm, I can't think of much more to say... I hope this helped, at all! Very Happy Any other questions, just ask and I can try my best to answer. Razz

^Check "Exposé" and "It was many years ago..." for things that might be inappropriate to your group.

It doesn't sound like it'd be too much of a problem. We definitely want to do a smaller show so that's good. I don't think the sexuality will be too much of a problem either. We're considering Batboy (which is how I discovered Zombie Prom), and I think Batboy sounds like its more risque.
