Zac Efron (Highschool Musical) to star in Hairspray Movie

Grr... First, we have Haylie Duff in Hairspray on Broadway. I don't like like it but I can deal. Now, I hear that they are making a Hairspray movie... with Zac Efron as the leading guy! (I've never seen Hairsrpay so I don't know who that is or how big a part it is but still!!) I hated him in HSM and am just wondering why broadway and musicals are being overun by popstars. Any one else have any thought?

Disclaimer: I heard this from a Zac-Efron-obsessed person so as far as I know it is just a rumor. Anyone with info plz post!

I think this is true..it's on IMDB..and I honestlt don't like most of the cast..it's apparantly as followed..

John Travolta-Edna Turnblad (I like him a lot but I don't see him in the part)

Zac Efron - Link( he might be ok...but if he really singls like he did in HSM *cringe* and yeah I personally hate that Haylie Diff is on broadway..her and her sister have no talent at all..especially vocally..don't think I'll be seeing that anytime soon as long as she's in it)

Amanda Bynes - Penny (I didn't know she could sing)

Michelle Pheiffer - Velma Von Tussle ( Very Happy )

Brittany Snow - Amber Von Tussle (ditto what I said about Amanda Bynes)

Billy Crystal - Wilber Turnblad (yay)

Queen Latifa - Motormouth Maybelle (woot woot!)

and I forget who's playing Seaweed and Tracy..I know Tracy's an unknown though..so good fer her!!!
lolliball91

wow, a lot of that cast surprises me a lot.
and I didnt know amanda bynes could sing either.
and Zac. Im Mad. I doubt he will be very good...but we will just have to wait and see.
Monsieur D'Arque

I hear James Marsden will be playing Corny Collins, and Jim Broadbent will be appearing as Wilbur- I guess Crystal dropped out, or was dropped.

At first I was really upset because I thought Zac would ruin my favorite Broadway show, but then I thought about it and it's actually a good thing because everybody who loves Zac will now go see Hairspray and it will probably get more popular (in the movies and Broadway), which is a really good thing for the performers.

yeah, except if Efron sucks.

Personally, I don't have anything against him, I just don't see him in the part, physically or vocally.

ok i love zac efron, but whatever!

I pray Zac doesn't suck in this movie.

i think he deserves a second chance. coming off a disney movie with huge sucess is like returning from the dead...... everyone associates him with that movie but some actors have good movies and bad movies. i think that yes, his singing could have been loads better in HSM but he can sing.

i think that he'll do a good job in the movie. I'm actually excited, i'm a huge Zac fan and i think that we should give him a chance to prove that he's not a disney-teenybopper-fake! have faith! lol

but to say......yes i had no idea Amanda Bynes could sing either. I think she'll be amazing though. Very Happy

yeaaaa... i dont care for the cast that much. i really dont understand why pop stars are invading Broadway either.

I hear that Christopher Walken is taking over the part of Wilbur now though.

According to IMDB, the only singing Zac did in the movie was the a capella version of "Start of Something New" and the begining of "Breaking Free"- the rest was dubbed by Andrew Seeley.

I'm not saying this is true, but IMDB has some pretty reliable sources...

well it said because Zac is a Baritone...but Link is a tenor??..maybe they will switch around the kneys like they did in the old version of Guys & Dolls for Sarah..but I heard he's had a lot of vocal training so he probably isn't that bad..I do think that it was obvious something was up with the tracks in HSM..they seem kind of fake/mixed to sound nasal and not pretty..it should be interesting nonetheless..oh and do dad Billy isn't doing it..he would have been amazing. Sad I'm sure whoever they get will be really good too though.

It's true.

That's what makes me so angry about Zac playing Link... he can't sing it... he will probably be dubbed again. I can actually see Amanda Bynes as Penny, provided she sings it well... and Queen Latifah fits Motormouth Maybelle, I think, and Billy Crystal seems a good choice for Wilber Turnblad... I don't know anything about Brittany Snow though.
BroadwayBaby0202

Honestly, I think Queen Latifah is far too young to play Motormouth. I know she's got a really good voice and it's definitely suited for the character, but seriously.....she's in her 30's.......

Argh!

Frankly, I was horrified when I found that Haylie Duff was playing Amber on Broadway, and I was even more horrified when I found out that Efron is playing Link in the upcoming movie. I hit my head against my keyboard repeatedly. I just find something wrong with pop stars (Disney stars no less) taking over the venerated stage. Of course, if I remember correctly, I saw that Usher is going to be in Oklahoma! (?). At least, that is what my newspaper told me. What is Broadway coming to?
