Youtube tidbits (Bway, Tour IV, LA, London) - UPDATED Aug 14

Finally found a method of converting some've the stuff I've got on VHS that didn't involve dragging the old VCR out and playing with wire connections. There also seems to be less quality loss this way, which is good given how old the tape is that I've pulled thus stuff in this post off of (and dubbed and redubbed) . Will have a time-killing project now to get some of the longer segments from this tape cut up (Variety special, E! Behind the scenes) dig up the other things I've got floating around on VHS (teensy bit of tourV promo on the news, quite a few more Caroline in the City clips, probably re-convert that old visa ad) so... please enjjoy these ones, for now, and add to the deep well I've already got going and wish me a little free time, k? ;D

And now, mmm-nummy-old-video-stuffs:

-- NEW --
(not from the same tape as above)

TLC "Cats" Special - 1993 - london circa 1993 + OLC; this might have been the first CATS-related thing I personally taped off TV (actually, I've got the whole 6 part series cuz 9-year-old me was just that nerdy about felines XD) and it's a rather fond piece of my collection, I'm so happy to finally share it ^_^ some of my earliest posts to the community, over at Vlado's forum, were trying to ID that swing... OK, done with the nostalgia Wink
Tony Awards Visa Commercial - I uploaded another version of this a few years back. This is the same commercial but with less static in the sound *shrug*
Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire - David Duchovny claims not to know CATS Cool ... I'm pretty sure that's Rosie O'donnel exclaiming in the background, which only makes it finnier Twisted Evil
Reading Rainbow #1 - Broadway - the first of two Reading Rainbow episodes with almosts the same bits of footage. This one has a more in depth look at Loni Ackerman's make up application for Grizabella.
Reading Rainbow #2 - Broadway - I think this one has more on-stage footage?
Urban Beat - Us Tour V 2002 - from the tour stop here in good ol' Vanny. On-camera interviews outside the QET and, wouldn't ya know it, not a VannyCAT in sight Wink We were probably neck-deep in lycra and knitwear somewhere...

*crosses fingers that all thos are the right links*
That's all for today but there is more coming!

Not CATS, but I know ~Bal~, Saff and some other might enjoy "Sweet Can" that I've finally got converted in hopes that someone, anyone, can tell me what the heck this is from Wink

Two on the Town - CATS - correction: LA Cast, 1985
80's (?) tour ad - features OBC
Greenroom with Mike Baker - US Tour IV ... cut off by home improvement >_< Not my doing!
Caroline in the City - "Annie" was supposedly a cast member in the Broadway production (Bombalurina's costume, though she was never named afair)
dream sequence on "Fame" - feature LA cast. Parts of this are pretty wicked, imho, and the thrown-together "kitten" at the end is so. cute.
1981 - I think this footage was from "Omnibus"? ridiculously nimble-fingerrred version of the overture, ALW waxing creative and OLC invitation

... I've got a broadway ad for "America's Favourite Family Musical" that keeps failing to upload so I'll try with that again whenever I can get to the next batch Smile

If anyone wants to confirm, correct or add to the information I've included with these videos please feel free to message or email me. As I said, I'm kind of doing this in my spare time, but trying not to get too distracted from the actual work I'm doing at the computer while the files are converting / uploading, so I admit I haven't been super-thorough with my research Wink

Those were absolutely awesome. Thanx so much for sharing!!

Do you have the ad with the dancers in the eyes? That was always my favourite.

Unfortunately no, I don't think I have a copy of that one. I'm pretty sure it *must* be online or someone has a digital copy somewhere, though, as it was never shown on the tube up here (that i know of) yet I've seen it. Odds say I must have seen it online.

Re: A few little Youtube tidbits - Broadway & Tour IV

Thanks so much for this.

Could that be Tour IV? The video is dated 1985. Did LA have a sit-down production of CATS? I couldn't catch the name of the woman interviewer but she looks as if she knows a little about dancing. She did her bit with Michael Ross (Tugger) very well. And she has a figure to be one of the "cats". (meeeeeow!) Embarassed

Yes, that's the ad I remember seeing in Atlanta in the 1980s. But the aspect ratio looks wrong. Looks like it has a TV aspect ratio stretched to fit a movie film's dimension.

And it got cut off just as I was getting really interested! Smile

I'm taking piano lessons so I know that is amazingly difficult to do. "Memory" is much more manageable. And speaking of "Memory", not meaning to sound ungrateful, why was that cut off?

Ah, thank you! Yes, my mistake, that is the LA cast in those clips from 2 on the Town (they have twinses Smile) . Once upon a time I had all these little facts on the tape memorized, but my focus has been elsewhere for some time now and I just happenned to stumble upon this little conversion loophole recently but haven't had the time to dig through my notes.
Yours is exactly the kind of help in pointing out these things that I'd been hoping for Smile will fix in the first post.

I just noticed that on the youtube upload... Not sure what's up with that; the video file is OK Confused Will fiddle with it at a later date.

I know!! You should have seen me watching this tape for the first time; I recall, literally, pitching forward from (unhappy) surprise because I'd been leaned in so attentively. Alas!
My tape is a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy (and more, perhaps) so someone out there has a full version of this interview. Maybe one day we'll see it.
Pounce wrote:

*shrugs* Because that's where the tape cuts out, unfortunately :-/ It's a bit of a rag tag collection of clips.

thanks for sharing *asterix* Very Happy the beginning of the Fame extract is really cute.
I regret I did not record Caroline in the City when it was showing on tv... I remember an episode when Annie was supposed to have saved the life of someone in the audience, and another one with a man that they pretented to audition for Cats... both had great shots of people in costumes.
Nedame

The Fame one is really fun Very Happy thanks for sharing

Asterix, I believe that I have at least a short clip of the dancers in eyes commercial. I can bring my tapes out in August if you'd like? I can leave them for a bit so that you can add my clips as well. I know that BC/EFA "Catanic" would be a hoot to have on youtube.

I love that Fame clip btw!

If I can find my Caroline tape, I'm pretty sure I've got both of those, or at least the portions pertaining to CATS Smile I remember oogling a jellylorum-ish costume, I believe, in the group photo with the saved audience member, and the guy having the fake audition was Annie's tax auditor, played by David Hyde Pierce, and he wore an Alonzo costume at one point.

I'll be pretty chuffed if I rememberred that right Wink

The portion of the procedure that gets a transfer-ready copy to me is rellatively quick so you won't have to leave anything (... I still have some've your tapes from 2 years back 0_o) - just dubbing from the VHS to a DVD-R (yay dual player!) which.. y'know... is just kind of a perfect excuse to sit down and *watch* the clips Cool

It's the actual conversion that can take time, but the tapes are out of the process by then.

If you don't mind sharing your stuff I sure don't mind helping you Smile

All of those were great, but the Fame one has to be one of the coolest cats vids I've seen.
Thanks for sharing!

Cool!! I love vids of L.A. productions of shows. I am desperately seeking any 2nd national tour Les Mis clips from L.A. when it played the Shubert. If anyone has anything from that era, let me know. I'd give an arm and a leg for those!

Yes, I'm pretty sure Cats had a sit-down production at the Shubert back in '85. I have the original souvenir brochure and it doesn't state that it was a tour.

Btw, who is that
*Moderator Edit* person posting that the videos are theirs and that they have been posted without their authorization on YouTube?
VictoriaTWC

*Moderator Edit* Those videos were taped by ME in the early 90's and were NEVER supposed to be traded. Someone who is NOT my friend anymore decieded to "trade" them without my permission and now I find that years later they are all over the net which ****es me off!

Those tapes took YEARS to collect and compile. Almost every "tape" that you can collect from CATS was probably one of MY taped bits, news clips, interviews, commercials and such.

The only stuff that's not taped by me is the stuff I've gotten from people in foreign countries. But all of her stuff was traded thru dubious means.

I never intended those tapes and news clips to show up on the net and even get traded AT ALL! Those tapes were my personal collection and very dear to me. To find out they were traded around for years is very upsetting to me, as I was betrayed by people I trusted.

As for CATS fans from this forum and others around the community, I take everything with a grain of salt. I truly do not trust any of you!

Settle Down...

Listen up, everyone...

YouTube and the like are not the domain of this Forum, so any complaints concerning actual items shown on these sites should be directed to their Customer Support/Owners. However, the Moderators of the CATS Forums can issue warnings and even banning members if we believe such action is warranted.

Again, the CATS Forum is for the edification of the Musical, and all we basically ask of the membership is to be civil and respectful - even in argumentative debates. I am asking members to avoid personal attacks, even if you are strongly opposed to certain items. If you must attack, do so concerning what is SAID, rather than WHO is saying it.

Such a unique definition of "YOURS". Last time I checked, Cats belonged to Lloyd Webber, Really Useful Group and T. S. Eliot's estates. I was not aware that making a recording from TV made the contents become your copyrightable material!

I get the impression that someone wasn't taught to share their toys.
Rumblepurr

Second Growl...

I have already growled once... If copyright material is an issue here, then allow RUG, ALW, Cameron Macintosh and TSE's estate to make the judgments. If collecting material from CATS were strictly enforced, every single CATS website (and any ALW Musical fansite in general) would have to be pulled... The summarized stipulation that allows fansites is relatively simple: As long as sites are declared "unofficial" (not being sanctioned by the aforementioned copyright holders), do not use copyrighted logos, and are declared non-profit, they are allowed to exist...

As far as media collections are concerned, I am not certain where the copyright boundaries are. Some of the material is dated, and may never be seen again if someone did not record it on VHS tape or even 8mm film. Some, like the TV show clips in this thread, could be archived and later released in boxed sets. Some, like the interviews and backstage clips, are one-time things. Regardless, some people go to a lot of effort compiling all these bits together in a cohesive file. Therefore, you can understand their anger when personal parts of that file show up online without their permission. Although not as original as fanfiction or fan art, such compilations are personal works, and should be respected as such.

Again, please return to the subject of the thread.

Yikes! Shocked

Sorry, didn't mean to start drama.

The 1980s Cat ad continued to air into the early 1990s. I remember seeing that on TV oh so many years ago.

That Fame clip reminds me of that clip of that daytime Italian talkshow host who sang Memory, danced, and eventually turned into a cat. It was posted a while back here, I think, and the costumes were more raunchy than the actual costumes.
