Your techie credits

To prove I'm not some bigheaded actor, here's my sparse techie credits.

Skin of Our Teeth-Props Master
Musical Comedy murders of 1940-Props Master
Witness for the Prosecution-Asst. Props Master

Lol. I'm working on my second project as a director now. I don't like it. It is so much more relaxing to be an actor...

But anyway, I just directed a staged reading of Death of a Salesman, and am currently directing a staged reading of Antigone. Oh, and I'll also be Eurydice in Antigone.
a Tech

I have waaaaaaaay more tech credits than acting ones (it's pretty obvious I'm not an actor-- I've only been in 4 or 5 shows), so I'll sort them by job as opposed to by show.

Deck crew: Smile, Will Rogers Follies, As You Like It, The Secret Garden, My Fair Lady, Joseph.

Head Deck: Seussical

Spot: 5 or 6 dance shows

Light Board Operator: The Laramie Project

ASM (aka babysitter): for a middle school production of Anything Goes

SM: Romeo and Juliet

And by the end of July, I'll have also done:
Sound Board Operator: Hello Dolly, Into the Woods, and hopefully Honk and Gypsy for a couple middle schools
Deck: Fiddler on the Roof, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Deck crew is just your average backstage crew- specifically the crew who moves the set during the show.

And you bet 7 Brides is Broadway By the Bay! So's Fiddler.

I've known them as run crew. Set crew is the people who build them.

I've ushered for shows and have helped with oddjobs around the set. Nothing too exciting.

I guess it can vary by theatre. The other high school in town calls them run crew too, but we definitely use Deck. We call the people who build the set the Build Crew, but that's never a separate group than those who work during the actual show. Actors hardly ever help with build. I think so far this show, we had one guy come in consistently, and that's it.

Do you do this professionally or just on the side, because I'm jeaouse. I want costume assistant jobs!!!

Actually, it's just a hobby. I've been paid a tiny stipend a couple of times (I got $50 to do "Meathook"), but usually it's just volunteer. I taught myself how to sew, and later realized how useful a skill it could be in the community theater circuit.

If you are interested in doing costume work, but don't need the paycheck, I would recommend you just offering your services to the costumer for whatever show is going on at your local theater. Most of them will jump at the chance to get an extra set of hands helping out.

As far as how to go about it as a career, I have no idea. Probably the same way. Volunteer or intern at a company in the costume shop while you are going through a tech theater degree program with an emphasis in costume design. Then just keep building that resume.

Yeah, I'm planning on getting a professional assistant job at my local summer stock in the costume department, hopefully in rentals. I'm going to college next year. I hope to focuse in costume and set design with my masters.

Applause Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Can I steal some of these credits?
BenjaminB

Why thank you. It's taken me awhile to get all those credits. My favorite show that I designed, directed, and/or worked on would have to be Jekyll and Hyde.
Tinker Rigger

So honestly, are there any PROS on this board? Anyone with an IATSE card? Road dogs? As in: do you know what a bunk sock is? Ever gone more than 2 days without a shower while living on a bus?

The term "techie" is an insult, and a sure sign that you are not legit.
cabaretfreak

^Hey hey!!! Dude that isn't very nice. Alot of us are either actors, or we are still very young! I'm just 18 and I'm going to college for design!! We aren't the seasoned pros that you want us to be. I want to become a pro and get my USA card!
lalala

Some people are just elitist brats!

Anyway, I've only recently done any backstage work - I was always too much of a silly little diva to even consider it, but now I'm realising how fun it can be! I designed and operated lights for a production of The Skin of Our Teeth, great fun.
cabaretfreak

^Lucky, me drama teacher never let kids design anything, unless they were basic pros at building sets.
Tinker Rigger

Elitist brat? Hardly. 17 years of sweat, all nighters, bad food, bad pay, bad venues, no excuses, just getting the job done every time gives me the right to say what I say the way I say it. Hang in there long enough, some day you'll earn it too. Welcome to the business, my friends. When it comes down to getting paid, you'll see this isn't some high school extracurricular activity. Most of us bleed for our gigs, whatever it may be- and yes, we are deadly serious and don't have time for bull$hit. For those of you that are young/rookies, I hope I've given you a snapshot of the future. And a warning: there is still time to go seek the safety of corporate America. You CAN know when, where and for how much your next paycheck will be! Very Happy

Yes, sleep deprivation makes me a ornery b@stard on posting boards. But again, I stand by what I say, and I make no apologies if anyone's fragile sensibilties are injured.

It wasn't that I didn't know about the horrible pay. I know!!!! Calm down, dude. I want to pursue something I love. Dude, get this straight WE AREN'T PROS YET!!!!! WE WANT TO BECOME PROS!!! I UNDERSTAND WHAT LIFE IS GOING TO BE!!!! I INTERNED AT A SUMMER COMPANY! I think if you have a huge problem with us and the fact we aren't pros, then go somewhere else.

Sorry about the caps.

I've worked my share of IA calls, but I chose not to join because I didn't want my options limited to union work. Which local are you in? I'm wondering about the "low pay" issue, since compensation is generally quite good, and good riggers rarely lack for calls.

There are very few pros on this board. The more experienced folks here chime in to help out when they can. There is a thread here about the term "techie" and whether it is an insult or not. I hope you post your two cents in there, since you obviously have strong feelings on the subject.

How about you share your technical theater credits with us? Not all 17 years, but just the high points. Smile
Tinker Rigger

Celeste,

You shouldn't be limited to only IA gigs if you join. Or at least I can say that Local 504 doesn't care if you work for a non-union shop. God bless IATSE, 'cause now I don't have to worry when baby needs a new pair of shoes. (And I think I finally get to work Iron Maiden this fall!!!)

The bad pay? Okay, that's whatcha gotta go through to get the good pay. AKA "payin' dues". Have I used the word 'pay' enough in this paragraph yet?

Am I pissed this isn't a "pro only" board as others ask? No, but I am looking for the ones that are here. The thing that does piss me off is actors looking for "a way to stay involved" by taking crew jobs. 99 out of 100 times, these folks are nothing but a sack of hammers.

Resume' highlights? Sure:
Currently: Flight Controller, "Remember...Dreams Come True", Disneyland (aka I'm one of the guys that flies Tinkerbell)

Stage manager/backline tech: Club Vodka, Hollywood

Rigged, operated, choreographed flying for over 80 productions of Peter Pan in North America and Asia.

Add 20 Oz's to that as well.

Stage Manager/Backline/Spot Op: Suncoast Hotel/Casino Showroom, Las Vegas
Stage Manager: The Orleans Hotel/Casino Showroom, Las Vegas
Assistant Carp/Rigger: Sam's Town Live! Showroom, Las Vegas

Stagehand: EFX starring Tommy Tune, MGM Grand, Las Vegas

ASM: California Repertory Company, Long Beach, Ca.

Somewhere in there, I acted a bit (before I changed my major).
Guilty pleasure: God do I ever love doing the Sound of Music!!!

Yes, I am sick. And you're all going down the rabbit hole, too.

Sound & LX Engineer for loads of gigs and small shows aswell.

http://www.californiamusicaltheatre.com/?page=1138200 - Music Circus... my buddy is a stage manager there. Are you there cabaretfreak?

Rigger - So where did you do all your Peter Pan stuff? I'm wondering if we've crossed paths... done it w/Foy a couple of times and ZFX.

Local 16 frowns on taking non-union gigs of the type I used to enjoy most. Now my union delimma is AEA, but that's even worse for limiting my options as SM.
Tinker Rigger

Hey C!

Okay, I haven't worked with your group, but I know why it's so familiar sounding.

A. I have a friend or two in Sacto that have told me about it.
B. I see their listings on backstagejobs.com

As for who I've flown for/with: Sorry, but as a matter of financial reciprocation, I don't publicize people I'm not currently on the books for.
AKA: you ain't payin' me, I ain't gonna pimp your service. lol

I will say that currently, the Mouse does me right. And the gear we have is bomber! (that means really, really good!)

As far as AEA goes. Egads, I gave up on them long ago. Maybe just go do rock n' roll where it don't matter. Too bad about your local.

Spencer! Smile He's the best. (Well, actually I don't know Craig, so it probably isn't fair to say. But I love Spencer!)

I'm usually just a lurker of sorts and check out these boards when I get the opportunity so I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon here as well and list some of my credits. I'm mainly an LD in fact I have an MFA in Lighting Design so yeah this is what I chose to do with my life hehe, fun but to pay the bills I do some stage work on the side...and Tinker_Rigger if you want to chat with another rigger I'm married to one Smile And he just grinned about some of your comments Smile

Anyway credits..yes that's where I was going wasn't it
