Your Other Life/Job when you're not performingFor those who do pro theatre, how do you keep food on the table in between theatre gigs?
A couple years back I took a serious stab at professional performing, but I'm a designer first and foremost so I always had design jobs to fall back on and keep me occupied when things were slow.
I'm curious to know how the fine folks around here keep occupied/afloat when things are slow.
Feel free to share your day job whether you do pro or community theatre actually!

I'm a college student. Between classes in the morning and rehearsals at night I nanny and music direct/choreograph musicals for kindergarten through fifth graders at a local Church/Child Development Center.
During the day on weekends (pre-call time) I stand behind the cash register at my father's Piercing and Tattoo studio.

Currently I'm working as an Educational Assistant in a local Grade School, and I've been working there (for free) for the past 6 years. In June, I'm calling it quits.
I sit on a local Youth Centre Board of Directors.
I tutor children in Language Arts.
I'm returning to the stage, though... in EVITA!

I work for a really insanely nice artist lady that designs gift products for museums/non-profits/retailers/ad agencies...and I do a GREAT deal of stuff here...I even designed a T-Shirt for the Met Opera! (I developed the concept, but not the shirt itself, to clarify! LOL!) I also helped her lawyer in a case against her former partner and am probably qualified to be a paralegal...I also take care of the books (invoicing/checks/insurance stuff), organize inventory, handle quality control on the watches we produce for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, proofread a lot of stuff, so I can let it slide here on M.net...and when I'm bored (which is quite a bit!) I come on m.net! LOL!
The best part is that she lets me take off of work whenever I need to for auditions and she caters to me when I have shows...
...Hey...it pays the bills, gives me insurance, allows me to take classes and lets me know that when I come back from a gig, I'm secure!

I'm an admin. assist. I do random stuff. Plan office parties, buy food and office supplies, make travel arrangements for different people, filing, sending out mass mailings, lots of random stuff. And like jazzy, when I get bored I'm on here
Unfortunately it's not very flexible. 8-5 M-F no matter what. Bleh. I hate it. I'm hoping that one of these days my husband will be making tons of money so I won't have to work as much

I'll clarify a bit on my job...
I currently work as the creative director/copywriter at my own design/marketing firm and now do mostly unpaid theatre work after hours.
After combining freelance design and acting gigs to pay the bills I realized that my type A-ish personality needs more stability, and theatre should really be more of a hobby for people like me. And thankfully, my current career has a nice balance of creative and corporate.
I'm so much happier after making this decision. But I give pro performers huuge credit for sticking it out and following their dream! It's quite admirable.

Does school count as a day job? Right now I'm a college student and I commute an hour most nights for my performing job. It's a pain in the butt and stressful but worth it. The show keeps getting extended but I think it's ending in April. So that'll be over and I also graduate in May. It's all going to end at once. I don't know what the hell I'm doing after that. Waiting tables?

I haven't had a chance to take any of the paid roles offered to me, so i'm not a working actor yet, though i hope it's soon... But right now, in between auditions, I'm nannying for my nephew. This only provides me food and shelter, though. No money for a cell phone even. I may begin working at big brothers big sisters soon, and that's a 9-5 job that probably wouldn't allow me to rehearse shows during the day... but they have a few positions there that allow you to work from home, so maybe i could transfer to one of those spots if i ever get offered a paid, day-rehearsing role...

I was working as a music/voice therapist in Queens but now that I've moved home to get my masters and I have zero money/no work in that field where I live, I'm going back to being a "shivers" coffee girl at Tim Horton's.

From 7-9 and then 3-5:30 I work as an educational assistant at a local elementary school. Pretty much we keep the kids occupied when parents have to go into work earlier than school starts or can't pick the kids up right after school. Then from 9:30-2:30 and 11-3 every other Saturday, I work in the office of an apartment complex as a secretary for the woman who actually one of the founders of my theater group. So work and play go hand in hand there. By night, I do community theater and two nights a week I teach a children's creative theater class.
