Your Favourite Thing About Sweeney ToddFor me, it was the music. From the first time I heard the songs from Youtube clips of the Hearn/Lansbury DVD, I fell in love,. Then I rented the movie and watched the whole thing, loving every minute of it. Sondheim was a genius here. The music is goergous, especially with all of the harmonies going on. Pure Beauty in every sense. I'm excited that the revival tour is oming to Toronto in the fall-I'm gonna see it with my cousin.Anyway, What do you guys think is the best part of Sweeney Todd? |

My favorite thing about Sweeney Todd is Sondheim's intricate and multi-layered score. I also like the message of the show.

I especially find the final reprise of The Ballad of Sweeney Todd stunning - with Sweeney's victims coming back on stage, and after the words "Isn't that Sweeney there beside you?", pointing at the audience and calling out "There! There! There!". It's a chilling end to the proceedings, and it's reminding us that, given the wrong circumstances, we all have the capacity to do evil things. Also, the reprise isn't just a reprise, it's a kind of symbolic re-starting of the whole thing, as if to say these things will go on occurring throughout history ad infinitum. It's a bleak view of humanity of course, but it's one which has great dramatic power in a theatrical context.

it's hard to name one particular thing - that's what makes Sweeney so great. It comes as a package: great storylines, great songs, great humour, greate messages. They all create the fantastic musical.
However, what makes it for me is the combination of humour with dark storylines. Also, the character of Mrs. Lovett is one of the greatest stage characters ever written. |

I love sweeney todd cause its so unexpecting. when i first watched it on DVD with Lansbury and Hearn I immediately fell in love! its dark yet still has the essence of the love twist almost all if not all musicals have. the characters each have something to them and the ending is so unexpecting. Tobias and Lucy are my favorite. the two that are the least expected but most full-filled!

I love the brilliant score, the fact that it is dark, and also the themes of good and evil. Oh and the revival orchestrations = love.

It's got such great irony. No one knows that he is actually Benjamin Barker. Mrs. Lovett is actually for him rather than the money. Adolfo Pirelli is actually Daniel O'Higgins. Tobias hair is just a wig. The honorable Judge Turpin is actually a pedophile/pervert and the respectable Beadle Bamford is crooked as a nose. Johanna and Anthony don't know that the barber is actually her father and the beggar woman, she hold's the most powerful secret of all which I can not spoil for you guys that haven't seen it yet.
It's great stuff with great music. |

the end of epiphany there is a major chord and when they cut off the major chord a minor chord is played underneath at like a third dynamic marking. i get chills every time =] |
