My first daughter is going to be named Catie Scarlett. End of discussion. I don't care what deals I have to make with my husband to get that, that is the way it's going to be.
I also like the names Sophia and others which I can't think of right now (just got out of work...too tired to think).
I like the names James, Aaron and Robbie for a boy.

They're different, but not too much so. Plus, people will mostly only hear their first names anyway. The middle names just make them prettier.

Call me a purist, but some of these.....wow.
I can't stand it when people name their kids really weird things just for the sake of it, or spell ordinary names weirdly just to be different. I dunno - it just grinds my gears. This is a kid's name! Not a way for you to express your mind-boggling creativity! haha.
No weather names for me (Rain, Ocean [I actually know one], River, Storm [one of my pregnant friends is considering it....wtf?]...etc.)
EXCEPT for Summer. It's one of my best friends' names and I think it's gorgeous.
My favorites are the classics, really: Ellen, Sophie, Johanna, Caroline...
I am, if I do say so myself, the master of the pet name! Haha.
I have two long-haired dachshunds named Spud (teehee!) and Duncan, cats named Alex and Mabel, and a bunny named Piper.

My son will be named Kaden Dale. I found the name Kaden on a website when I was looking for names for my charecters for my novel and I loved it and Dale was my fathers and brothers middle name. They are both deceased now and I want to honor them. I have no idea what I would name a girl. The tradition in my family is the men name the boys and the women name the girls.

I agree about weather-related names like Ocean and Rain maybe not being the best choices. It would affect the way the child is treated; kids would probably have all sorts of witty puns lined up. However, River is a very special name to me. I know it's unique and different, and when I tell people I want to name my future son River they laugh and say something like, "I'll come visit you and River in your little hippie commune" When I told my best friend who is from Korea and speaks English as a second language she was like "River?!? Like water?" and laughed for about five minutes, haha. I just think a name should be special and have meaning. I have a sort of unique name, as I've never met another person who shares my name. I might change my mind in the future but the name River has stayed with me for years.

I've heard River used as a name twice, the actor River Phoenix (RIP) and the character River from Firefly/Serenity. It works for both boys and girls.

I have a thing for flowers. So my poor daughters are all gonna be named stuff like Lily, Rose, and Violet. And everyone's gonna be like, 'your mom is so lame! She has a THEME for her daughters!'
And then I'll burst in and be like, 'I can't help it the fact that the three prettiest names in the world to me are all flowers. I can't help it! And I can't help that these names all run in my family. Cuz we're big fat catholics #1, and #2 we all love to garden!'
And that's how I'll ultimately defend myself.
And my sons are all gonna have old Hebrew names from the old Testament that no one will be able to pronounce. Poor things. I got no defense for them yet.

Flower names can be pretty... like Rose and Violet. My favorite flower is the Pansy, so I doubt that would make a good name for my child, haha. I knew someone named Blossom. We called her Bee though. As for themed names, I met a family with every child starting with a "K" except ONE kid, who was Jim. So the kids were Kia, Kara, Kevin, Kyle and Jim.

I really like the names Sofia and Clara and Alyson. And Jack/Jake.
However, this might all change when I start teaching and connecting names to certain students.

See, I get that some names are inappropriate to name children, but Chrysanthemum really is one of my most favorite names ever. I first heard it in that kid's book about the mouse who got made fun of because of her name, but then she came to appreciate it, and I've loved it ever since. So many flower names are pretty common, and this is one that is almost never used, yet it's really pretty. You can also make a ton of nicknames out of it. It's such a delicate name, yet there is a certain strength behind it, too. And I really think it would make a great name, once they would learn to spell it.

I believe names should have a meaning behind them. Named after somebody important in the parents life, a favorite author, or something. It will carry the child through their lives, so it has to be meaningful. The name is the first gift a parent bestows on their child (besides life) and is the most important.
Also I think my aunt and uncle have the way to go. They pick the first name together, has the fathers last name, and the middle name is connected to the mother. Their son's middle name is her step-father's last name (he played a big role in raising and supporting her) and their daughter has her mother's first name.
My other aunt and uncle gave their son the mom's last name but named him after tradition of the father's side.

I'll probably have to marry someone French because I don't have quite enough French blood to pull some of these off as it is:
Marguerite Marie (Margeaux for short)
Johanna
Elizabeth
Charlotte (Lotte for short)
Caeli
Alanna
Lynette
Jillian (but Jill wouldn't be a nickname--it'd be something cuter like Jilly Bean, lol)
Henri
Edouard
Antoine
Armand
Francois
Etienne
Aloysius (Wish for short)
and many more...
When I actually have kids, I probably will not really torture them this much

I'm probably in the minority because I do not believe in naming children after people. There are many ways to honor someone who is special to you, but I think another human being's very identity is an inappropriate vehicle for that. Not to mention "junior" situations...how selfish do you have to be to name your child after yourself?

That's a good thought, and as I say, it's noble to want to honor those who are special to you, but I just cannot reconcile myself to using my child's identity as a means for something that is really for me and not the child. I see that as something that would make the parent feel good, but may not be the best thing for the child. How does it feel to have the very essence of who you are dedicated to Grandma Kathy or Uncle Chris, from day one?
|

|
I don't think by giving your child a relative's name as a middle name that the child's essence is dedicated to the relative's memory (I hope I am understanding what you were meaning, Beagle) . In my case, it's to give my children history. So they know where they come from, in a way. My daughters each have a middle name from their grandmothers, and my son has two middle names for his grandfathers (he's the ONLY boy on my side of the family). My husband and I decided to use family names for middle names so our children would remember their family history. It wasn't to honor another relative so to speak. Plus the names are pretty.

The way my parents did it, my brother and I got middle names and Hebrew names that were in honor of favorite deceased relatives, though not the actual name. For example, my brother's middle name is Scott and mine is Allison for my mom's great aunt Sally. And my Hebrew name is/was Rivka Sarah, with the Sarah again for Sally. My brother's Hebrew name I can't remember, but it was for a different aunt of my mom's.
