You can't take it with youMy high school is doing this next... and I'm not sure if I want to audition or not. I'm not a huge fan of straight plays, but I need thespian points so that I can go to the Internationals if we get in for Into the Woods.
If I don't audition, I want to be the assistant director of the Middle school's musical, which is sadly High School Musical. But I have to apply for this, so I don't know if I will get it.
But I might also be Mabel in Pirates, but that might be later in the year.
If I do audition, which part should I go for.
I'm usually cast as the ingenue, or ditzy girl.
I was thinking about Essie.
Advice?

I really like "you can't take it with you" it's a great play. I would definitely go for that, and you should probably go for Essie then

I've played Ed Carmichael, and I know the script calls for him to play "Blue Skies" and "Goody, Goody", and to ad-lib something else on the xylophone (I used Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag). If Essie is on stage for these (it's been 16 years ago for me), you can dance to these melodies as she's constantly dancing anyway. IMHO one of the top 10 or so comedies of the 20th century.

I was just saying that I'd rather be involved with a musical than a play.
I love to act.
and I love to sing.
So I'd rather do both at the same time.
THis would be my first shot at trying to direct a musical, so should I do that instead?
I don't know what to do!

"You Can't Take It with You" really is hilarious and wonderful. I just saw a high school pull it off really well. I would say go for the play, and try for Essie as she is fabulous. Or, maybe you could direct the middle school show AND have a small part in the play, such as Gay Wellington (drunk actress) or the Russian woman (can't remember her name). The play is really great and I wouldn't miss an opportunity to be in it.

You might be surprised at how much you enjoy yourself, doing a straight play.
I'm totally with you on Musicals; ever since my first one, I've been completely hooked. But I started out doing straight plays, and did them for a long while, and feel that they gave me a solid foundation when it comes to the craft of acting.
And I feel that in doing musicals, while I come in contact with amazingly talented singers and dancers, many don't seem to grasp the art of dialogue and characterization; while my experience with dramas and comedys has given me a leg up, and is also probably the reason why this semi-newbie singer gets cast over girls who have been in singing lessons since the age of four.
So, it's good to spread your wings....unless it refers to me taking on a dance role- LOL!
Have fun!
