Yorkshire DialectI might be mistaken, but the Yokshire Dialect sounds a whole lot like an irish dialect. I am trying to learn it, so I can nail my Dickon Audition. |

Yorkshire is more like a mix of Scottish and your sterotypical English accent. Yorkshire is very close to Scotland. Watch the non-musical film.

Thanks. I will have to work on a Scottish Dialect then...I am trying to figure out which way to approach it.

Yorkshire Dialect Resources onlineActually, saying that Yorkshire is nothing like Irish is not wholly accurate. It does sound a bit like the Northern Irish accents. It's no more accurate to say "work on Scottish for the Yorkshire dialect" than to say "work on Irish"--but you have to know WHICH Irish accent. Ideally, work on the Yorkshire accent itself, but even then, there are a number of variations on the Yorkshire accent--what you're looking for with this show is the more rural sound. If you're looking for Yorkshire resources, here are some options: You can listen to native speakers at the International Dialects of English Archive: http://web.ku.edu/idea/ If you're looking for something that actually teaches accents, check out http://www.accenthelp.com --There you'll find downloads that teach you how to speak with accents and there are recordings of natives included. There is a specific Yorkshire accent download that teaches what you're after. You can also order dialect CDs from http://www.dialectresource.com which will include instruction and examples. You'd want the "North Country" CD for the Yorkshire dialect. (Full disclosure: I'm a dialect coach and contributor to both IDEA and AccentHelp.) This is a challenging dialect to pull off. I've coached this show before with professional actors who've done a number of dialects, and it was still a struggle for them. Nothing substitutes for having a dialect coach to lend an ear, but these resources should get you going on the right track. Good luck! |

I just listened to the OBC CD for my accent when I played Martha.

I didn't think Martha or Dickon's accent was very good at all on the OBC. Sorta wishy washy.
(and yes I have heard a real yorkshire accent before, I live in England for a year) |

Re: Yorkshire Dialect Resources online
I stand by what I said, Yorkshire and IRish are SO SO Different. I know about British accents, being British and all, and having friends and family from Ireland and Yorkshire. |
