i'm not a big fan of this show and both movie versions had things i didn't like.

There were actually some pretty good moments in the Disney one, but they were all overshadowed by the awesomely awful miscasting that was Matthew Broderick.

well i think nothing beats the original music man infact i'm watching the original right now!
although, the disney version isn't all bad it has very catchy songs.

The original all the way. Robert Preston was way better than Matthew Broderick.
He and everyone else in the movie were totally miscast.
I hate remakes anyway.

Hahahaa... he was HORRIBLE. He looked like he couldn't move his head independently of his body- stiff necked. I wasn't so fond of Cheno as Marian either. Mostly because her face and hair were the same color and that bugs the crap out of me.

Oh, agreed...yet another reason I don't understand the Cheno love out there.
However, I did like Victor Garber and Molly Shannon as the Shinns.

I only saw the Disney one and it was because extra credit, and I want to see the original.
My parents prefer the original by far.

Hated Cheno in WWOD version but loved Molly Shannon
The orginal was perfect, my family taped the WWOD version off TV and then ended up just buying the orginal later.

Hermione Gingold is a great actress and all but i just couldn't keep myself from laughing at molly!

I'm new to this musical. I just saw the Preston/Jones movie, that's been my only exposure, but I kind of cringed at the thpough of Cheno playing Marion, so I looked for pictures, and I cringed even more. She was a cute Glinda (the role was literally made for her so you can't go wrong there) but still...it just doesn't feel right. Same with Matt Broderick, although it may just be because Preston was so fun to watch that I can't see anyone else pulling it off like he can.
Anyway, like I said, I'm new to to the show, but I hope you guys can help me become more familiar with it.

I really liked the dance scenes (especially Marian the Librarian and to a lesser extent Shipoopi and 76 Trombones). I loved how they incorporated the Shinns and the other characters into the dance, and I wish it was something that would have worked when I did the show, but it wouldn't have (those of us who know that version know why).
I also liked Garbor and Shannon as the Shinns. I incorporated several small corks of Garbors Shinn into my own interpretation.
But overall, I went with the original.

are you nuts?? Hermione owned that role. Molly Shannon was dreadful..even Victor Garber was miscast. he wasnt funny at all..Paul Ford was and always willbe Mayor Shinn.
