wow, this keeps happening...Apparantly I have different tastes...?
this just happened on the BATB thread. My least favorite song is the one that is winning the elimination game.
And here, a song I liked just got dropped. (Piano Lesson)
Not that it was my favorite, but I liked it. Why doesn't anybody like it? It's very clever and gets across so many ideas and lots of backstory in a relatively short and sweet amount of time: We find out that Marian is the Librarian ("entrusted to me"), Mrs. Paroo wishes her daughter would have payed attention to the salesman, that Marian has high standards, that Marian is looked down on by other women and Mrs. Paroo has her ideas about why ("when a woman's got a husband and you've got none..."), Mrs. Paroo thinks Marian is too smart for her own good, Mrs. Paroo thinks Marian should lower her standards, and the family is Irish. And both women are kinda spunky, or Marian can be when riled. Now how long would that have taken in a dialogue setting?? But it takes about a minute and a half in song, and punctuated by Amaryllis's mistaken "Thank You!"... I just think it's precious.
The only thing awkward about it is that it has the lowest notes that Marian sings in the show, so as a former Marian, when you've been practicing mostly higher soprano stuff for weeks and then have to rehearse Piano Lesson, singing a (low)G seems a lot harder than it should be.
