Would You Be a Mod if You Could?

Just imagine: MdN needs a new moderator for whatever reason and they have gone to you. Do you accept?

I wouldn't. Not right now. I need to grow up a bit first.

Des.
Fontinau

Oh HELL no.
Kad

If I was asked, yes. I wouldn't volunteer.
Mel AKA Maureen

I would.

This is only because I've..

A) done it before and was very popular

B) love this place and hate where it is going

C) like some mods and would hope to colaborate with them

D) would like to replace some people
Amber

I think I need to be here a bit longer before I could even think I could handle being a mod. Plus, I think I just like posting. No worries about which threads to lock, if a member should be banned, etc. Nope. Not now. Maybe someday I would say yes.
Desperado

Never.

I rare find anything offensive enough to be locked, especially arguments.

I'd never meet my "locked post" quota.
Carbucketty

I'd say no.

Also: I haven't met my locked post quota for today. Can I lock this one?
Descartes

I'd prefer if you didn't.

Des.
Mel AKA Maureen

No.

For reasons that I can't say, cause then you will lock it.
broadwaychild

if i was a mod.....

i would change EVERY single post to say...

See, that she can say this...and be serious, shows just how sad the moderation here has gotten. We can't say our honest opinion of the moderation without it being locked.

Me...if I were asked, I would say yes. But my main goal would be to limit the amount of moderation done. Sometimes you have to become part of a system to bring it down.

That's funny, because I didn't. Sarcasm doesn't always register over the Internet.

Which is why so much of this is BS. It's just the internet, people.

I must say that I don't find yours or Carbucketty's jokes(?) at locking this.

Des.
Jennyanydots

If I was asked, I'd do it. I'm here all the time, I've been here for ages, I know the people, I think I can read personalities and such very well, and I tend to see the good in most everyone. I have decent social skills and fair judgement.

But I would never volunteer! Shocked
Descartes

As I mentioned to Mel, we may not have long to wait, depending on what GayBoy is going to do.

In mdn's history, has anyone ever volunteered to moderate?

I voted "No."
Kad

B3TA07 wrote:

Wrong. That's how the current batch of moderators was (supposed) to be chosen, aside from JP and Carb. Short little essays were sent in, describing why you would be a good moderator.
B3TA07

I voted "No" to the poll, not my question. Sorry for the confusion.

What’s actually sad it that you have bought into that theory and so has Mel. I challenge you to show me a thread debating this that we've locked just because of that debate. It's a myth which is why it’s actually laughable to Carb and I.

There are a few threads dealing with moderators that were locked but they were locked when the conversation became abusive and off topic not because of the debate itself. Go and look for yourself.

http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43969
http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42413
http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42665

The vast majority of the threads [and there has been a lot of them recently] have remained open and the debate ended naturally.

I do find it very sad that people believe the myth that we lock threads for such reasons and then won’t post their opinions. It makes me sad because the myth is now perceived by some as reality.

There are other myths going round as well, for example, ‘You'll be banned for saying that'. The largest part of me thinks it’s sad but there it still part of me that can see how ridiculous it is. We are currently trying our best to sort this out. I cannot tell you more as things are not finalised yet.

I ask you all please, not to buy into these myths but look for yourself at the actual evidence and not just what your hear from others. Not that I am blaming anyone but the myths feed themselves and, once they take hold, are hard to dispel.
Mel AKA Maureen

Fine.

You shouldn't lock this because there is no point and you are just flaunting your mod power.

You, Carb, and Beagle are under the impression that people like to be condescended. Hey guess what, they don't.

Carbucketty wrote:

While I see this might be intended to be sarcasm...I wouldn't say its doing well dismissing this supposed myth.

Many threads about mods were locked because "there was already one thread about it" (while the topics discussed in one thread were different than in others...it really just kept one "friendly" thread while elliminating unfriendly ones). This isn't often done with other things to my knowledge. If two people are asking for audition info on the witch in into the woods, but both present different songs they are choosing from, would you lock one of them and say "theres already a thread about this stuff"? I think not, and if so, that seems mighty silly to me.

Also, please check your PMs if you have not.

~The Lone Wanderer
dramatic_mizfit

I wouldn't. Too much to do. I already have a hard time moderating and administrating my drama club's forum board, and there's only like 10 members there. Laughing

If it's not being done, it should be. Don't we have a specific sticky for audition advice?

Actually, if I had control of the forum setup, all audition threads would be move to a specific forum for audition advice. It's a service which MdN would be good at providing. It would be away from the distraction of the standard banter here on misc.

Ok ta.

See, you had your say and the sky didn't fall in. No power was flaunted. You didn't get banned and it wasn''t locked. The reason, cos nobody has been rude or abusive.
Mel AKA Maureen

Uh huh.

Isn't there some law of nature that says if someone tells you that you'll have a certain reaction, and then do it, you'll do the exact oppiset just to prove the person wrong...?
nat915

No flipping way. That's too hard a job.
Quique

Surprised...

I wouldn't mind being a mod. I think I'd make an excellent one actually.

And no, I wouldn't be some delete-happy, hyper-banning, veangeful twit, as most of you probably assume.

Sorry Quique but this is a lie. There are people you would have your eye on. You have made this clear since early 2005

I agree. I would have my eye on certain people...

...on those who are known to break the rules.

Which includes me (Hopefully not anymore but I am trying my best not to.), you, and a few others.

But isn't that a mod's job?

Keeping an eye on people?

*Shrugs*
Pasty

Definately would.
Fogeyman

I probably would if asked. Unfortunately, I'm not here as often as I would like.
ShadowInTheWings

Wouldn't even consider it myself. Way too much work, way too much criticism. I'm happy just to post as I please.
Sairin

I voted no, but I'm reconsidering due to the fact that I don't really take part enough in discussions to be thought of as madly partisan. And I've modded before. It'd also be interesting to see if I could do it without making the smart people hate me.

The reason for locking such threads when there's more than one is because they usually involve fairly complicated discussion. People who want to contribute to them should easily be able to read everything that other people have read without having to hunt through other threads. The thread that is kept open is usually the oldest one, or the one with most posts in it. The only reason for locking the others is to make it easier for all of you reading it and posting to it to follow what's happening - no conspiracy.

Quique

Wow, heehee!

What made you respond to this after nearly a year? Very Happy
Quique

lol.

You're so cute, Mumsy, heehee! Very Happy

Anyway, I definitely remember that time. Oh, it was absolutely horrible. I'm just glad it's over.

I think it's great the way things turned out though. Funny thing, it turns out the members who were banned aren't that bad after all. I think we all needed time to calm down a bit and take a deep breath from all the heavy arguing. Both this site and the other one are doing great. Both are active, peaceful, and focus primarily on musical theatre.

Funny cause, personally, that's what I always wished for - just to have a place where people get together and talk about their love for musicals, without the divisions and bashing, and that's exactly what we have here and over there now. It's nice to just talk about theatre without all the drama (no pun intended, lol). =)
OnceUponATime

It's fun revisiting old posts, isn't it.

And hindsight is a lovely thing.

I agree with Quique. I like things the way they are much better now, as well.
jcstar

I am a mod over at What's The Buzz. I'm in charge of the Interviews section... under me real name.

I am also a mod of a Yahoo group.

Fortunatly, I haven't had to do anything, aside of setting some rules.

Andy.
MademoiselleMusicals

I would like to, but seeing as my time is limited on the internet and I never seem to get on the comp cos of commitments it would be unfair to be a mod.

Agreed.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

The larger a forum is, the less interested I would be in modding it. I don't like sorting through a lot of drama.
