WORST MUSICAL EVER.

Just curious Smile What is everyone's least favorite musical and why?
PS I'm sorry if there is already a thread for this.
Salome

my top most hated musicals..that actually saw professional productions...

Children of Eden
Aida
Jeykll and Hyde

all have poor lyrics, underdeveloped characters, weak score and as far as j&h and C of E, poor direction and blocking in the broadway and papermill productions respectively.
Aloysius

Almost anything by Rodgers and Hammerstein, for besmerching the name of musical theatre with their saccharine tripe

Grease - Cheesy as hell

Blood Brothers - Actually so bad it's good, just listen to those lyrics
LadyOfTheLake

Bombay Dreams. No explaination necessary.

Worst Ever?

Not great shows, which may be "least favourites" but worst musical ever? Not one of them qualifies as the very worst ever.

Of course, the original post was ambiguous...

If you tihnk most of R&H is saccharine tripe you havent seen anything they wrote except Sound of music.

South Pacific,King and I,Carousel are far from sacchirine they are trail blazers of gritty musical drama. South pacific won the pUlitzer for drama.
and even Oklahoma,Flower Drum Song and Pipe Dream are far from fluff when done properly.

Amen. Thank you.

King and I and Sound of Music = *Yawn*

Grease is so increadably annoying, as is most Disney ones.

I concur. Also...

How in hell could they besmirch the name of musical theatre? They almost invented it...

Though I admit I can't sit through the movie version of King and I.

This person needs to listen to Billy Bigelowe's Soliloquy.

As for my opinion...

I have low standards, but I just can't stand Miss Saigon. The Engineer is a nice saving grace, though... but then it's not "The Worst Ever."

I actually agree that the direction and blocking of the Broadway J&H sucked...a lot.
Theaterfan101

Not that I've seen it, but many of my friends have told me that this title belongs to "Mask" based on the movie. [/i]

How can you possibly dislike the film version of King and I? its the best film version of any of their shows.

Brynner won and oscar..Kerr was nominated..it was also up for best picture.

I like the Wiz. It's a nice take on the story. Though I do understand that the stageshow is supposed to be better than the movie. Most things are.
The Guard

The revival/TV version of IT'S A BIRD, IT"S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN.

It's just bad. My alma mater almost did it this year instead of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS, and I came this close to auditioning for it, just because it's one of the most ridiculous things you could ever be in.

I'm not a big fan of THE BOY FROM OZ either. Decent music, I just think it's somewhat overrated.
Salome

Superman is a fun fucn show!! what didnt you like about it??rrbtw..there never was a revival. i heard it was doen for t.v. who were the stars??
Monsieur D'Arque

The revival was one of those Encores! type shows. Cheyenne Murphy was Superman, I think.
Salome

who played max?

The Worst Musical Ever?.......:

HIGH

SCHOOL

FREAKIN'

MUSICAL!!!!!

(sequels including)
Theaterfan101

^ no we are talking about musicals, not t.v. movies
Anno_Domini

^ Yes, actually. Though it began its life as a TV movie, the rights to it have since been released to community and school theatres nation-wide. A community theatre in my own town is putting it on this June, as a matter of fact.

In fact, I thought it was pretty well-known by now that the stage version was being produced for Broadway.

And besides, who says that films such as Moulin Rouge and South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut need to be performed on stage in order to be called musicals?

it's in the West End now and it plays all over the US now.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I'm sorry, it's just so ridiculous.
Mungojerrie_rt

Oklahoma. *Shudder*

The music makes me ill.

Cats. yuck.
(Sorry to the above post...haha...looks like you're a fan! Razz)

I feel sorry for you.
youl ike cats but can't appreciate a masterpice like Oklahoma.
without Oklahoma them usical theatre would not be what it is today.
nabla

I've never been a big fan of Rent, i wouldn't say it was the best musical ever, when Shrek the musical comes out i may have something real to post about/
The Guard

SUPERMAN: THE MUSICAL was on Broadway, and was revived later in the seventies for a TV version (actually, I think there might be two TV versions).

It's just way too campy and ridiculous, and doesn't feature hardly any of the beloved elements of the Superman mythology. And the storyline just plain sucks. There are little bits and pieces here and there that it gets absolutely right, like Lois and her foil's interaction with Clark, but for the most part, it's just awful. Especially given the fact that Hal Prince was involved, the music is just substandard in my opinion.
Salome

Jack Cassidy's songs were great though.
windscreen

Bombay Dreams makes me want to kill people, like the entire cast, producers, writers etc....Grease is embarrasing, and Oklahoma..where's the freakin story?
mizzie

BROOKLYN.

I genuinely believe it is one of the worst shows ever written (that's been on Broadway), it's only redeeming factor being Once Upon A Time, and ONLY because of Eden's amazing belting.
shakalakababy

Loving the bombay dreams hate, lol. It's okay, my screen name is from it but i'm not really a fan. I just like that one song.

And i'm sorry but i can't for the life of me understand why someone wouldn't like Oklahoma. I think it's fantastic.

Honestly there really aren't that many shows I dislike, I can find at least something I like about almost any show.

The only shows I really don't like are Mamma Mia!, Joseph, and well High School Musical I guess. I think the latter may be able to qualify for worst musical ever.

Me too. For example, I may not be so fond of The Wiz, but I must admit that 'Ease On Down The Road' is a pretty catchy tune.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL
BECAUSE OF THE MOVIE ALL OF MY FRIENDS HAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT ALL MUSICAL THEATER IS "GAY"

I HATE THAT MOVIE WITH A PASSION

*Gasp* How did you know? Laughing

I just really really don't like Oklahoma. I find the music dreadful. It's so cheesy it even passed the stage of being funny. It was written as US propaganda anyway.

I basically just don't like any R&H at all.
Salome

a) its not cheesey. its real

b) it wasnt written a propaganda it was based on green grow the lilacs

c) cats is probably the cheesiest musical out there.

d) without r&h you wouldnt have the modern musical theatre.
MunkustrapQC

The Wiz

It's the only musical I heard the music and really was like : Confused Ok.....?

No, up till now, no one has ever thought of this topic.

The worst musicals ever, never made it to the Broadway stage.

I dunno. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood. It was a long time ago... I'll try again, but somehow I just wasn't hooked.

Also, it was late...
Mungojerrie_rt

I didn't like King and I either. I do think the cast is very talented, but again, it's a matter of the music and individual tastes. If you don't like the music, you won't like the musical. (Rather obvious)
