Worst Movie musical remake everfor me I think it would be Bye Bye Birdie.
what do you think?

out of all the ones i've seen......hmm, probably The Fantastiks. That almost made me gag

While I've done both of those, and agree that they are NOT great adaptations, for me it would be a tie between Brigadoon, which ended up cutting out the best subplot and two terrific songs, and AFTHOTWTTForum, which was just a shadow of its former self when "they" were done. Man of La Mancha wasn't so great either, now that I think of it.

Forum...by far. It does the play no justice at all.

I KNEW you were going to say that
And Sweeney, even though Zero Mostel and Jack Gifford were delightful as Pseudolus and Hysterium, and it's always a treat to see young Mr. Crawford, I can't even consider it a musical. It's a film with a few songs.

LOL. And I knew you were waiting for me to say that
As for worst movie musical period...A Chorus Line. What a travesty.

A Chorus Line is kind of impossible to film successfully, in my opinion. It's truly a stage-piece.

I like Forum, simply for the fact that it is the closest thing I will ever see to "real Roman theatre" in my entire life.
They totally took it back to its roots.

Me and my sister couldn't sit throuigh Godspell's opening sequence without bursting out laughing at all the prancing hippies and Victor Garber with that ridiculous superman shirt and the heart painted on his afroed forhead. It just didn'y make much sense.
POTO also suffered from bad casting (except Minnie Driver who was hilarious and mimed the singing really well, and Miranda Richardson, who actually went throutgh the effort of putting on a Frebnch accent, although no one else in the cast did)
Now, I like Sweeney Todd, and the casting fit well into the film, but I still fill like wincing over the cutting of all the chorus pieces-the ballads, the chorus in God That's Good-and the cutting of Kiss Me, Mea Culpa, and 75% of the Beggar Woman's lines.

Phantom has the great Simon Callow in it..how can you forget him?
ten times better than Minnie Driver..she was miscast in so many ways. too young, couldnt sing it and just tried too hard.

Minnie Driver was awful, her voice over singer should have played the role in the film. Has been doing a great Mother Abyss in Sound of Music in the West End recently. I was also dissappointed with Forum, really nowhere near as good as the stage production. Agree with Man of La Mancha. I didn't mind A chorus line so much but missed some great songs from the stage production.
Mistress - why do the characters in Phantom need a French accent? That makes no sense at all.
|
Mistress
|
Well...it takes palce in FRANCE...the accent is not a big deal or anything, and I didn't say the characters HAVE to do the accent, but it's shows that Richardson actually put effort into her rather small part by doing it.
Wow...I didn't realize that Minnie Driver was so well hated here XP...I seriously thought she was hilarious...and yes Salome Simon Callow as good too (although Ciaran Hinds' Firmin sorta killed it XD...just like he killed Rochester...)

Phantom has never had a French accent in the production since it first opened in 1986. Why would the movie version of the musical be any different? Putting on a French accent was not necessarily Richardson's choice or "idea" - they get told what accent to use by the director and producers.
Minnie Driver is not hated - she is just not that well respected as an actress.

Minnie Driver is well respected. has anyone seen her brilliant turn on "The Riches" opposite Eddie Izzard?? but she isnt am usical theatre actress.

Actually I felt the godspell film, all htough avangarde did a decent job. It wasnt my favorite but not anywhere neer the worst. I was able to sit through a chorus line and not have to many regrets.
I would chalk up the worst movie to Fantastiks. It was so bad I couldnt even sit through the whole thing. Which is very odd for a guy who will sit through, watch, and find some sort of enjoyment out of almost any movie.

I'm not disputing that - but the fact that they took it out of the prison dungeon (and the minds of the prisoners and audience) and made the windmills real, and the inn real, etc. etc. ruined it for me. It's supposed to be in the mind's eye of the listener - "Imagine, if you will..."

yes..but done that way it would just be a filmed play.

Hair wasn't good either, they pretty much slashed up the whole story, and a funny thing is, with all the nudity in the film, it was still rated PG!LOL!

I find it a littkle unusual that the producers would have everyone BUT Richarsdson doing the generic Brit accent...unless they're making some sort of point by having Mdme. Giry stand out in that way.

Yes, but done the way it was destroyed the entire premise, thus making it less than good.
I saw it in the theatre when it first came out, since I had done Aldonza (and since directed it twice) and when they went from the prison to outdoors, it was so startling to the senses I nearly broke my neck.
There would have been far better ways to do it - heck they hand painted black hairlines into the Appalachian scenery on every exterior shot because the movie of "Deliverance" looked too lush and green, and not sinister enough.
| musictheatre00 wrote: | | Hair wasn't good either, they pretty much slashed up the whole story, and a funny thing is, with all the nudity in the film, it was still rated PG!LOL! |
Now this I totally disagree with. I thought the movie was powerful and amazing and life affirming and scary and beautiful when I saw it in the movie theatre when I was 23. We had just lived thru Vietnam. It was still darned close to the surface...and apparently I wasn't alone in liking it since it was nominated for half a dozen awards including two Golden Globes.
It brought us Treat Williams, John Savage, Beverly D'Angelo, and Annie Golden. It's one of my favorite adaptations, actually.

i'm not saying it wasn't a good movie on its own, I thought it was great on its own. But when looking at it compared to the stage version I just didn't like how they changed a lot of things.

Regarding the accents in Phantom - if anything, I think Richardson's choice to use a French accent for Madame Giry threw everything off even more. I think she's a brilliant actress and while I may agree with her reasons to use that accent, the simple fact that no one else followed suit made her stand out perhaps too much. I don't require a French accent to believe the story is set in France, and in all honesty, I only believe a small handful of the cast could pull it off convincingly. Having one lone, very distinguishable French accent amongst a sea of North American/English accents was distracting for me.
As much as I adore Miranda Richardson's talent and past work, with the exception of Patrick Wilson I feel the entire film was miscast. Pair that with Schumacher's RIDICULOUS "young and sexy" vision and ALW hanging around like a drunk cheerleader, the film was utter crap for me.

The Rent movie was so vastly inferior to the stage show. Not only is Chris Columbus's direction boring, but they cut the best song. What the hell?

Well they cut a lot of things, including all the tune ups and phone messages in the beggining (some of which were SPOKEN in the movie, at least the first tune up was.... ), We're Okay, the show versions of You'll See and La Vie Boheme, Halloween, On the Street, Happy New Year, and Contact.

what do you mean? by going back to the original "I Am A Camera' script? or by casting the American Minelli as an english girl?
|
Gwen

...
Well now I'm embarassed. Was it more based off of I am a Camera than the Cabaret production? (Though I know the stage version of Cabaret was based off of I am a Camera...did they intend to base the movie off of that too instead of basing it off the stage version of Cabaret?)
Sally being American did kind of irk me, though I suppose it's not too extreme of a thing...
What I mainly missed were the characters that you see more of in the stage version.

I think Little Shop is one of the finest film versions of a stage show.
as for Cabaret..to answer your question..yes the screenplay is very close to I Am A Camera. the characters, plot and even alot of the dialouge comes right out of the play.
