Worst make up for PhantomI remember seeing Phantom a couple of years ago and that hole in his skull had been painted in reddish colours making it look gory instead of well, grey and dead. Anyone else know of bad make-up for Phantom? |

Well, from what I saw on my DVD, when POTO was being developed and staged at ALW's house, with Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom, he basically wore the top part of a Darth Vader Helmet, with the rest of his face painted black.

Some of the ones I'm about to list are versions which might look awesome in the auditorium, from a distance. But they look utterly silly in pictures:
http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/spain1.jpg - this one looks too pained and fake for my taste. It's Juan Carlos Barona fromt he spanish production (an AWESOME Phantom, BTW) http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/swe1.jpg - Wish I had a better picture. This one looks so... wierd. So... black. Mikael Samuelson from Sweden is one of my absolute favourite Phantoms, but that doesn't mean I have to dig his makeup. http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/mexico2.jpg - Saulo Vasconcelos from the Mexican production. It actually looks quite realistic, but it looks a lot more like an acid accident than something he was born with. Can't decide whether I like this one or not. Vasconcelos is another Phantom I love. http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/brazil1.jpg - Vasconcelos in his makeup from the current Brazil run. This is too much for me.... But as stated above, it might look very effectful on stage. Some I think is extremely good: http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/uk11.jpg - Earl Carpenter in West End. This is freakin' awesome. I love the details of the nose and the skull, and also the sickly greish yellow colour. http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/us11.jpg - Hugh Panaro, Broadway. I have never understood the nature of the shinyness, but I do love this version of the deformity. And with his thin and narrow face, he really looked like a walking corpse. http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/japan5.jpg - I think this is Yuichiro Yamaguchi from Japan, but don't quote me on it. Coool makeup anyhow, and slightly reminding me of the current UK one. http://www.geocities.com/potodeformities/japan4.jpg - Another amazing Japanese one. And some I haven't uploaded pictures of yet: many German ones (both some extremely good ones, and some that looks like the makeup from "Cats"....), the current World Tour version (with the special earless feature, as they did it in Australia) and several from the UK, US and Canada. Sorry if the site is down - it happens whe there's many visitors. It will be back in half an hour or so. |

Oh yes, here is the Woeld TOur one, with Brad Little:
http://www.geocities.com/theweddinggown/wt4.jpg It's rather over the top, but I like it. The ear-less design is quite interesting. |

Thank you for all those pictures. Some of those show exactly the kind of thing I mean, BRIGHT RED DEFORMITIES! Please, get some idea about stage make-up. She hasn't torn a lump out of his skull so we can see the blood beneath!

I have a picture of Michael Crawford in almost the same makeup. Interesting. I like looking at the different types of get-ups for the Phantom. I've never really seen any up-close. We weren't close enough to see really good details from Gary Mauer's makeup when we saw him last week. |

I agree that this is the make-up that MC had more-or-less.

(or if I remember correctly, he's actually using THREE contact lenses in that picture - a dark blue with a white one overneath for the right eye, and a dark brown one for the left eye). |

Make-up...What's up with Barona's make-up, LOL! And Vasconcelos' make-up in the Mexican photo looks 100% silly, heehee! It looks as if a rat came along at night and chewed his face-up and he didn't even notice!The Brazil and Sweden ones aren't too bad but one thing I've noticed about those, is they looked as if merely painted-on. It looks as if they didn't bother with the prosthetics that most Phantoms wear underneath their make-up. I just thought of something, could it be maybe the actor's fault? I mean, maybe certain actors don't like the idea of coming-in two hours prior to each performance and sitting there to get the make-up applied? Maybe they just paint it on for some, cause that's what it looks like on the photos I mentioned. Both the Brazilian and Mexican photos of Vasconcelos seem as if it's just painted on. If they did do that, maybe it was only done on matinee performances, considering they had to apply it again for the evening performance? I don't know, I'm not a Phantom expert, but I know for a fact that the Mexican, Brazilian, Swedish, and Spanish productions all used the prosthetics that were applied originally on Crawford. But I agree that the make-up in those photos looks cheesy, hehe. It's funny cause I have seen pictures from both the Spanish and Mexican production where sometimes it seems they use the prosthetics and other times it looks as if they don't. I've wondered about that for a while and it'd be cool if someone knows for sure what's up with the make-up in these and other productions I don't know of, hehe. |

So I'm assuming that the well-done Phantoms have latex applied? Does that make it more difficult for them to sing? It looks like it would get in the way if they opened their mouths really wide.
| ShadowInTheWings |
Is it just me or do his lips distract anyone else? Ir's like they're all I can focus on. They are really gross looking. I would hate to play Christine and have to kiss lips like that, it might give me nightmares. |
||||
| dramatic_mizfit |
I think the whole face in general is a distraction. |
||||
| operafantomet |
Well, that's basically the point.....
No, all of them have the latex applied. The latex deformities are three pieced, and glued to the face, so it don't really distract the singing. The difference lies in how the latex is decorated - how much paint goes on top. Like the Swedish one - you don't think that's Mikael Samuelson 's lips, do you? http://geocities.com/potodeformities/swe1.jpg Same for the ones used by Saulo Vasconcelos - yes, there's lots of paint there, but most of the shape and texture would never be created with makeup alone. |

Heh, I got Crawford-ed at work last Halloween
Making the deformity red plays into the commonly held phan idea that he has porphyria or some bleeding disease. |

Dear God, that's horrendous. It looks like something from a carnival. |

Sorry to bump this thread but I only saw the film last night for the first time and wanted to mention how bad I thought the Phantom makeup was but most especially the mask.
All the way through the mask was so tiny that it looked like all it would hide was a tiny bit of a rash or maybe a large pimple. We kept joking that he'd take of the mask, she'd get him some clearasil, clear up his adolescent acne and they'd end up happy ever after. Then suddenly off it comes and bits of his face [his eyes, his chin etc] which we could see clearly before were 'deformed' when they hadn't been earlier. Bad bad bad. Also, one minute he was clean-shaven and handsome, then she whips of the mask, he loses hair on his head [which I can accept] but gains a 6 o'clock shaddow, instantly. |

Don't most Phantoms have their lips like that? I know that Matt Camelle did.. |
||||
| dramatic_mizfit |
I think Joel Shumacher can be enough blame for everything. |
||||
| Fantine |
Yeah I noticed that too. That is actually one of the things which really bugs me, along with the other problem you stated in another thread: the ageing thing. |

Look at the ads in the bottom of this thread.... |

Gerard Butler's prosthetics were simply wrong.
That will be all. |
