Worst dubbing job EVER!

Dear Musicals.Net Posters,

We probably all know that various actors have had their singing voices dubbed by professional singers for various movie musicals.

Of course, some dubbing jobs have been better than others. Which dubbing job was/has been/ is, in your opinion, the worst EVER, and why?

Thanks in advance for your replies. If you mention a new musical, like Dreamgirls, I'll just die, because with today's modern technology, there's NO EXCUSE for dubbing jobs to look bad! Of course, I doubt that any of the principles were dubbed in movies like Moulin Rouge, Chicago, or Dreamgirls.

Baz Lurhman had all of his actors sing their parts while they were being filmed - that was then mixed in with their studio recordings for the final edit. Can't speak for Dreamgirls, as I haven't seen it, but I know all actors in Chicago and Moulin Rouge recorded their own parts.

As for bad dubbing - three words. High School Musical.
Parts of the King and I are questionable dubbing wise, but its a classic movie as well as musical, so I don't mind.

teh worst I have seen is the dubbing for john Kerr in South Pacific. Bill Lee,a tenor, dubbed his songs but Kerr has such a low speaking voice that the transition from dialouge to 'Carefully Taught" back to dialouge obviously sounds like two different men.

Yeah...that does sound pretty funny! You're not expecting him to suddenly become a tenor! LOL!

In West Side Story, Rita Moreno being dubbed by Betty Wand during "A Boy Like That" is pretty crappy. It doesn't get the emotion that Rita's putting into the part at all!

to add ot that..Richard Beymer's dubbing in WSS is pretty shitty as well.

Yeah! Considering he sang it BETTER than the guy that dubbed him! LOL!

oh lets not forget how much better Ava Gardner was in her vocal tracks than Anita Warren who dubbed her in Show Boat.

Don't even get me started on that one! LOL!

What a shame!

that whole version of Showboat was awful though..some good performances but they butchered the script.

the James Whale original is so much better.

The Little Shop of Horrors movie. Holy crap. Rick Moranis... ya you can tell it definitely wasn't him.

^I totally agree! I actually meant with Salome...didn't see that post...

Rick did his own singing! LOL!

That's what I thought.

HA HA HA yeah rick mornais did his own stuff.

I would say phantom. I know most of them did there own dubbing but there is somthing that just seems odd between what your seeing on screen and what your hearing.

I think a lot of cheoreographers or directors in dubbed over musicals don't realize it needs to look like the actor is singing while they are doing the complex dance/movement. It's not a big deal, but there are little things in some movies that seem totally off because a real person would be totally unable to sing and perform the action at the same time.

I think it's funny how in "West Side Story" both male leads are dubbed, but still neither of them is a very good singer. Laughing But Salome, I heard somewhere that they actually went to a lot of trouble to find a singer whose voice sounded as close as possible to Richard Beymer's speaking voice.

One that jumps out at me is in "Little Shop of Horrors," when Audrey sings "Where relationships are no go-o-o." I'm pretty sure it's Ellen Green singing, but it's really obvious to me that it's not happening live.

OH! Wow, the world makes sense again! I just saw the South Pacific movie last week, and it occured to me that something was wrong with that song, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Now that you mention it, though, I understand.

The worst I can remember is Fabian singing the title song for "Five Weeks in a Balloon". He's sitting up in a hot air balloon, strumming a little banjo or ukulele or something (it's been too long since I've seen it) in the FAKEST manner I've ever seen, and the lip syncing is just awful...ugh...
Glissando

In the movie of WSS, during I Feel Pretty, I think Natalie Wood's real voice is in there for the line "That the city should give me it's keeeeeyyy!". And if it's Marni, that's an unusual bad note for her (I'm a Marni fan).

I thought Riff was only dubbed in the Jet song, and it was by the guy who played Ice. Confused
Glissando

That's what I heard. (The guy who plays Ice I think is hot.)

LOL, my friend says that too. Smile

It's his eyes.
