Wizard and I foreshadowingOh gosh. When listening to "Wizard and I", does anyone else just want to cry when Elphaba is so excited and goes "I'll be so happy I could-melt!" and "celebration throughout Oz, and all because of me!!!!"
I'm sorry, but I just want to jump in there and go, "no, no, no, no, NO!"
Am I just insane? Or is that a pretty typical reaction?

actually I get all emotional too, it's rather embarassing. I cried the second and third time I heard the song. Since then I've been able to contain it better lol.

I was sad the first time I heard the recording. (I read about the storyline first.) And the part about, "a celebration throughout Oz that's all to do with me." Yeah, little did Elphaba know that they'd be celebrating her death!

Yeah, exactly. That's what I kept thinking. It was a bit sad the first time I heard it, but not as much now. I love this song!! Actually, "For Good" follwed by the Finale get me a bit teary as well

It doesn't really make me feel sad for some reason...Opening night, after Idina sang the "I'd be so happy I could melt." bit, there was actually quite a bit of chuckling in the audience.

There's quite a bit of foreshadowing throughout the show.
"Life's less painless for the brainless" and a couple others in dancing through life.......haha little does he know that Elphaba is gonna turn him into a scarecrow.......HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I think the authors knew, though.

I always get really sad when she says "Would it be alright by you if I de-greenify you?"
"But of course that's not important to me. . alright why not!!!?! I'll reply. . "
It just seems like she's trying so hard to act like she's a strong person, even though deep down inside she wants to be like everyone else more than anything.
I just love the Elphaba from the book, and I love that song because it's the only one in the show that seems to be sung from that character's perspective.

Yeah, you're so right. I'm Not That Girl, Defying Gravity, and No Good Deed are sung from Elphaba's perspective. And Elphaba's parts in What Is This Feeling?, As Long As You're Mine, and For Good don't show her perspective either.

Well they didn't say that.
I'm pretty sure anyway that most of Defying Gravity and No Good Deed show very accurately from novel Elphaba's point of view... For Good and As Long As You're Mine could be argued as reflecting novel Elphaba as well. And besides, in the novel, Elphaba doesn't randomly let out spurts of magic, so Wizard and I wouldn't make a ton of sense either...

Ahh, you're right, I suppose. I guess I just didn't transfer "Elphaba from the book" into "that character's perspective."
Oh... nevermind. I don't know how to say what I mean.

It's probably not that fact of the whole melting thing. Just that she so wants to be "normal" and have someone actually accept her. Her father never loved her and she thinks that it's her fault that her mother died. Everyone can relate to her, which is probably why some get so emotional.
There's so much more like how during No Good Deed, Elphaba gives up about trying to make good and the heart break that she's gone through and some lines from As Long As You're Mine...how she finally has someone to love her.

I guess I can see some of the novel Elphaba in the other parts of the show you mentioned. . but there's something about "The Wizard and I" not necessarily the fact she's magical. . or that she actually likes the Wizard (not in the book. . ). . but just the perspective in which the song is sung from. .
That lonely sad college student who has no friends. .
She just seems WAY too independent and cheery in the other songs.
I love that she's trying to convince herself that she's good enough. . it's so classic novel Elphie.

No Good Deed cheery? Huh...that's the first time I've heard that song described as cheery...If I recall the novel correctly, Elphaba is VERY independent. She sends Glinda back to Shiz and lives by herself in the Emerald City until Fiyero finds her. Then all those years locking herself away in the towers of Kiamo Ko. Even as a baby, throwing her food on the ground. I never really figured her as a dependent.

Yes. You're correct she doesn't melt, but we are all using our previous Oz knowledge with this one.

Says who? It may be ironic and funny, but there will always be a twinge of sadness to it. At that point everything is possible for Elphaba. She sees that she can have it all, her dream of meeting the Wizard and being adored throughout Oz. Of course we know how it will turn out. Her vision is right, just not the reason.
I know what I mean, but am finding it hard to put into words.
Now the funeral for Scrooge in Christmas Carol is funny when he thinks they all like him. This isn't.

I got so mad when the audience didn't get the foreshadowing in "Wizard and I" when I saw it last week. They didn't even laugh or anything...just sat there while I laughed hysterically to make up for the silence after she sang, "A celebration, throughout Oz, that's all to do with me!" I'm sorry, it just gets me mad when people don't get a good joke/emotional moment.
P.S I was also mad when she didn't squeal "I'm Meeeeelting" or even melt at all for that matter at the end!

I probably loved Wicked so much because I always got teased in school for being the one who loves the "disney" endings! lol. IDK, I just think it's so much better to end on a happy note and feel good driving home and thinking how elphie and fiyero will live happily ever after. haha. I never realized how much of a loser I truly am.

lol, me too!
It feels much better to imagine the musical ending. It's kind of like "The Little Mermaid" I read the real version of it, and decided I liked the Disney version better because the mermaid kills herself over the prince in the original fairytale.
Way too sad for me, lol.
I'm happy, romantic, and cheesy all the way.

I love how the musical is "based on the novel by Gregory Maguire", and the only true similarities are the names of the characters... its a funny. I heard some people my age read the book and be like... "WaT?!?!1 FiYeRo Diezz?! i <3 fiyero!1! hes sooooo hott. THIS BOOK SUX!"
yes. Real life conversation...

The book and the musical are two different things. I don't look at them as the same thing - rather two different takes on the same (or simmilar) story.
As for the ending - I think both are sad. In the book, she dies after living a tragic life. In the musical, she must live not ever able to see her best friend again. Wouldn't that leave you slightly empty inside? And Glinda thinks she's dead, so she has to suffer under this knowlege, and can never know the truth that Elphaba lives. If you think about it this way - it's still depressing, just not as tragic as in the book.
