witch in wizard of oz

Our high school is doing wizard of oz and I am DETERMINED to land the role of the wicked witch. Anyone have any tips?? Also, does the witch have a song?

Practice your cackle. No songs for the wicked witch.

in the 1998 show, i BELIEVE (don't hold me to it), there's a song called "miss gulch" that miss gulch (who is the wicked witch) sings. other than that, the part is heavy on acting.

actually most productions of "Oz" give the witch the main part of 'The Jitterbug".
The Drama Queen

Well, SOME give Jitterbug to the Witch but it's not in the script or score to do that, so I'm guessing it depends on the actress playing the Witch's ability to sing the song. You should probably gear your audition mainly towards the acting aspect (especially the laugh!!) and don't be afraid to not do it like the movie. Most of the time directors will appreciate the creativity if you really make the character your own.

You also might want to try posting this in the "Auditions" forum to find some more help Smile

No the Jitterbug doesn't have the witch. Dorthy, Tinman, Scarcrow, Lion sing it (and the bugs themselves). The monkeys come in at the end of the song since the witch sent them and the bug, but the witch doesn't sing at all. She really is a charecter peice. I sugest that you think of why the witch is evil without going to "Wicked" themed, since in OZ, we is bad, but still must have some reason.

Have a look at this excerpt: http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/shows/1materials/wizardofoz.html
Have a play with it! Fun, fun. And probably useful Smile

I have actually seen a local production where the Witch sang "The Jitterbug" and it worked really well, but as others have said, I don't believe there is anything specifically written for her to sing.

Its not written in the script that way but alot of productions give the main part of Jitterbug to the Witch. Ive seen the show done twice with the Witch doing it. I know what I'm talking about.
