witch help/advice on what to do

i'm auditioning for the witch in a local theatre production of ITW. i really really want this part and i believe that i can preform it well. i've played many other roles, my fav was lucy in charlie brown and company, and i think i can get this part.

the only thing is one of my good friends also wants the part. and i'm getting worried becuz... 1) she's taller than me, 2) she's skinnier than me 3) she has red hair like Bernadette Peters 4) she goes to see "wicked" on broadway like, every month, so she knows how to be a witch. she can sing but she's never gotten roles like i have.

me on the other hand, i'm short, i've got dark hair, i'm on the tanner side... and i can sing, act, dance etc... i'm singing "stay with me" for the audition and i'm gonna memorize the scenes we have to act for the audition.

so basically, does anyone have any advice on what i can do to impress these guys so i can get the part??? i'm really worried so ANY advice would be greatly appriciated. thanks

One of the biggest things that's important with Sondheim musicals is that they have so many quirks and personality that it's not like she materal one moment and angry the next. She has reasons for everything she does. The Witch doesn't have to be tall and red-haired. Have you ever seen the picture book verison? She's got purple hair! Laughing

My advice for acting is making the Witch prominent and stand-out. In Act 1 she pushes the baker and his wife around to achieve her own ends. In act 2, she has no power over them, but still feels she is better than all of them, because she's not a thief, a liar, or anything like them. Let's give the boy to the giant because he deserves what he got for stealing and killing. Not only will he be punished, but the giant will go away! She can't understand why they wouldn't hand him over. She punished the Baker's father for stealing her rampion by keeping his daughter. Then she had the baker help her get the ingredients so she could reverse the spell his father activated.

Yes, she also loves Rapunzel and mourns her death. In a few of her songs, she mentions that she was once young, innocent, beautiful and a lot like Rapunzel, with no idea how bad the world was. Her mother warned her, she didn't listen and this is what happened.

Hope it helped!Love your screenname, by the way!

Vanessa Williams was the witch in the revival and she is blonde and tan. Chill out about the looks. And the witch in ITW is a lot deeper than the witches in Wicked, trust me. Seeing Wicked a lot does not make you an expert, or any better of a performer, and it won't help her at all actually. And you already said that you had a better resume then her.

Your list of reasons is awesome. I wouldn't take any of them as serious reasons though...so don't worry bout it too much (especially the wicked one...)

Just a bit of standard advice, don't hesitate to volunteer to go first, it helps you stick out in a good way. Don't be intimadated at all by anyway else auditioning for the witch, and DON'T try to imitate something the person before you does. You probably already knew all this, but good luck at your audition!

[sarcasm] This is so important, like, OMG! You have to see Wicked, like, atleast, like, 600 times to play a witch in any musical or play. ALso so you can, like, learn how to, like, scream (aka "belt") [/sacrcasm]

A real tip: Do NOT portray the role as Margaret Hamilton did in The Wizard of Oz. I just saw a production of Into the Woods Jr. this weekend, which was an excellent production for what it was, but the witch was AWFUL because she played the witch all cackly and her face was painted green and she had the stereotypical pointy hat, etc.

Good Luck to the both of you! Post your results here.

Green skin for the ugly witch? Not too bad of an idea, but that would make it too much like the wizard of oz for ITW. No, the only unatural colour for the witch should be the purple hair!
