Musical Fanatic!!

Will Wicked run for longer in london if it's a hit??

Will wicked run for longer in london if it stays a hit (as it sold 100,000 tickets in its first hour of sales?)
rockyrocks666

run longer? i thought it was a pretty perminant production
Ahereford

Yeah, it is permanent...
rockyrocks666

thought so, glad to hear it!
London01

I guess it will.
Not sure about the location.
I would have loved to see Wicked at the Drury Lane and not off West-end in Victoria.
Can't wait to see the London production.
Pounce

Like most musicals, it will run so long as it stays profitable.
Musical Fanatic!!

okay
MademoiselleMusicals

I imagine it would run for a long time seeing as sales have been record breaking.

Musical Fanatic, on your Current Obsession, can you please limit the amount of exclamation points by, like...... a lot? Cause it's messing up the display. Smile

Sorry... Very Happy

Not many musicals make a profit (only 1 in 8, I think is the stat). Wicked will make its money back, that's for sure, so, I am sure it will run a while. It will be interesting to see how it runs when Idina is out of the production, and all the screaming american/british teenage girls are not hugely interested in it that much anymore - so, let's see where we are in 18 months from now.

It's playing at the Apollo Victoria because it's now the biggest theatre in the west end, and it's still considered a West End Theatre.

Is that right? I thought Theatre Royal, Durey Lane was the biggest theatre in the West End (excluding the ROH).

Theatre Royal, Dominion and the Apollo Victoria are the biggest theatres left - the Dominion lost about 600 seats a while back when they scrapped the upper circle, and converted it into office space. Theatre Roayal is very prestigious, but I think Wicked will actually run longer out in Victoria. There's less demand for the theatre from other productions who might try to buy them out, as Lord of the Rings did to We Will Rock You when they wanted the Dominion.

The original post makes no sense - of course it will run longer if it's successful. They'll keep it open while it makes money. If no-one buys another ticket from today on, it'll close. If people keep buying tickets it'll be there 15, 20 years +.

Thanks for clarifying that Belle. But does anyone know the actual order of theatre size? I mean out of them three which is biggest, 2ed..etc...? I always thought the Prince Edward was the 3rd biggest in London...is that right?
nickhutson

it all goes down to what the specific requirements are for each produciton (seats taken out etc)

Apollo Victoria is the biggest - 2,600 seats
London Coliseum (Home of the ENO) - 2,358 seats
London Palladium - 2,291 seats
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - 2,188 seats
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden - 2,160
Dominion Theatre - 2,137 seats
Lyceum Theatre - 2,107 seats

Hard to beleive that the biggest theatre in New York (Gerswhin - where Wicked is at) only has 1,500 seats!
Belle

And hard to believe the biggest theatres in London have all closed/been converted... the Empire, the Hippodrome, The Apollo Hammersmith as well IIRC, all were 3000+ theatre/cinemas. And Broadway always gives the impression of being so much bigger! Hah!
nickhutson

Well - the Hammersmith Apollo is still used for theatre and concerts. 5000 seats...huge venue. Little Britian is playing there for a while - Dr Dolittle played there for a while, and I saw Joseph there.

Stand up comedians play there...

...Including Eddie Izzard.

"HAMMERSMITH APOLLOOOOOOOOOO!"

SapphireNight

Well, I think I can safely answer that by saying: HELL, YES!
I am writing a very detailed review, though it might be a bit too detailed for you. If you do read it, I suggest that you DONT read the invisible text. Anyway, I think most of the forum now are about to tell you just how good or different or whatever they think Wicked is, so I will pass over to them...
no_bigger_wicked_fan

of corse!

of course it will run just as long as broadway, as long as I keep buying tickets!! Cool post jordan!! Cya! Very Happy

The Apollo's perfect for Wicked - I don't know if you've been yet, but the original theatre decor (which is now being refurbished thanks to Wicked) is meant to be like a mermaid's palace - all green, silver and ver art deco. The green LED lights on the exterior of the theatre were in the orginal designs for the theatre, but back in the thirties a mixture of problems with budget and technology meant they were never put up. The great thing is, the theatre you see today is not only as the original design intended (there's a bit more work to do in the theatre itself, but you can easily imagine it) but its all in GREEN!! Which hardly hurts for the production....
I don't mind it being out at victoria either - really can't be arsed with over-touristed leicester square/covent garden/piccadilly areas Mr. Green
nickhutson

Yes - it's a good location for Wicked. Very easy to get to, as well. Don't get lost through the alleyways of theatreland trying to find it! You walk out of Victoria station - and there it is!

The exterior is slightly more exciting than the Gerswhin Theatre...

Interestingly, though - London's other big musical - Billy Elliot - is just round the corner - at the Victoria Palace - so, it's a good spot for popular shows. I bet it's a nightmare at 10.30pm on a Friday night! Pubs must love it!!!!

They did re-do the interior of the Apollo Victoria very, very well. I love all the green! How appropiate!
