will not be adding any more songs to my rep...

This is pretty loosely related to auditions, but I just sort of feel like complaining about it.

I began seeing a new voice teacher a month ago and she sees serious issues in how big my vibrato is, how dark my voice is below my passagio, and how off pitch I am on my passagio (D, E, and F). So she said she doesn't want to assign me any songs to learn until we get this other stuff under control.

I'm super excited that she is so determined to clean these things up, as my previous voice teacher let them slide for 2 years, but there are some recorded auditions I need to prepare for. 2 opera companies' recorded audition deadlines are in November and if she's putting my learning new rep on hold, I fear that I won't be ready for these auditions.

I know I should trust my voice teacher, but I'm a little frustrated... what do yall think?

It's definately a good idea to spend some time focussing on technique without throwing any new songs into the mix. I had lessons for nearly a year before I got my first real song (though I did do a musical after six months). However, if you really are concerned about preparing for your auditions, let your voice teacher know. You should tell her anyways, as she'll be the one helping you out for auditions. She may teach you a few songs, or ask you to redo an old piece. It's her call; you should try to trust her judgement, unless somethings is really, really concerning you. Whatever you do, don't do anything behind her back; that's just asking for trouble.

I totally agree...(BTW...I know you are in high school and I was really impressed with this post. Don't let it go to your head, but this post really shows that you are wise beyond your years! LOL! Smile )

Just be up front about your upcoming deadlines with your teacher. As musical theatre actors/opera singers, it's not always ideal to just stop learning new stuff because there are always deadlines! I'm sure your teacher will understand. Tell her you will try your best after that to follow her regimen, but this is really important to you...

I agree - you should really discuss this with your vocal instructor. The reasoning behind not learning new songs is sound - when you are trying to correct bad habits, new songs only encourage you to slip back into old ways. Perhaps if you talk about this together you can work out a solution - your vocal instructor is focussing on your long term development while you are currently looking at your immediate needs - hopefully you can find a balance.
