Wilfred Hyde White

Time to sing this man's praises. whenever people mention My Fair Lady, the film. you hear about Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn, or Stanley Holloway.

Hyde White was the perfect Pickering, lending his great talents to the role of Shaw's most famous "voice of Reason".
so lets praise his performance here.

I've always been fond of him- especially as he had the same birthday as me Smile
Salome

you should check out the 2nd film version of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. its not as good at the first version but Hyde-White plays the Judge and Stanley Holloway plays the Private Detective. they are wonderful in the roles.

I think he's brilliant! There's such a genuine kindness to his eyes in that role...

If you overanalyze the show like I have, it's safe to say that Pickering (especially when he was played by Wilfred Hyde-White) is the most non-threatening male character in the show.

Think about it...we have Henry Higgins (male chauvinist), Alfred P. Doolittle (alcoholic/mooch), Zoltan Karpathy (BS artist of the Nth order, but still a very funny character), and Freddy Eynsford-Hill (borderline stalker). Until the end of the show, Pickering is the only male character that truly sees Eliza as a human being.

And here's a random Wilfred Hyde-White fact: one of his children married Karen Dotrice, who played Jane in "Mary Poppins".
Salome

is it Alex Hyde White who married her? if thats the case both father/son and father/daughters are famous.
RTTugger1977

I do believe it was, but I think they're divorced now.

He was the perfect Pickering... such a gentleman... It seemed strange that he wasn't married. He was a great old man. Wouldn't you love to have him as a grandpa??
Salome

If you loved him in MFL you should check him out in some other great roles especially in the 1965 remake of Ten Little Indians as Judge Cannon.

Hey, Salome, out of curiousity (and I know it's really off-topic), could recommend the "best" version of Ten Little Indians/And Then There Were None? It's just that I've had the horrible experience of coming upon some utter travesties of Chrisite's films...mainly that horried ABC Murders with that tall, lanky, American actor playing Poirot (I never bothered to remeber his name)...the only Chrstie films I like are the BBC miniseries films (David Suchet needs to be loudly exalted, as do Joan Hickson and Geraldine McEwan)...I know there are a couple versions of TLI/ATTWN, but, which one is the best in terms of adaptation?
Salome

the best by far is the 1945 And Then There Were None starring Barry Fitzgerald,Walter hUston,June Duprez and Dame Judith Anderson.
the others change characters and plot points.
Mistress

Thank-you very much...I'll definitely check it out.
Salome

Mistress,
Did you ever get the film?
