wicked on the west end

Wicked is going to the west end!!! yay, not that it makes much of a difference to me because i'm still waaaaay over here. but i thought you all should know!
Clairvectra

One thing ive been wondering about Wicked in the West End is whether the show will have American Accents if the performers aren't American. Being in England and going to an English college, I was taught on my theatre course that unless a show is set in a particular place like in Oklahome for example that the accents should be British. My old college recently did Into The Woods, and they did British accents... im sorry if im not being very clear but this is the only way i can describe what i mean Laughing

I think they will go with English accents. There really isn't a definitive accent for Oz. I think it could work with the English accents.

My sister has a great way of singing "Popular" in a perfect cut-glass upper class, pony club accent. It works brilliantly, and is every bit as funny if you take Galinda to be from a posh boarding school.

However I suspect they will use softened fake american accents... Somehow does suit Morrible's americanisationisms.

I most definately would say they do it American.. dunno why, just because thats Wicked isn't it? thats what has always been done with it thats adds the sparkle to it!

Plenty of shows that started out in the UK did not arrive in the US with British accents intact.
actor

I would hope they do it in American accents.

I've tried singing the songs in a british accent and i just can't (even though i am british myself).

Wicked just is American.

And i definately cannot see Glinda as british!
Madaboutmusicals87

here here thats exactly what I think!!!
Lastnightoftheworld

I'm so excited about Wicked finall coming to the West End!
I'm not sure what they will do about accents, I can't see it working with English accents!
little_ashlie

i know what you mean! I hope they do it in american accents-i don't think some of the songs would work with english accents. Although i see your point about galinda being posh, i think it works so well with her being barbie-ish(!) I don't think her character would evolve enough-because she's supposed to become more mature, and i don' think if she starts off posh that would be as affective. I personally wouldnt mind either way-i'm just excited its coming to London-yay!!! Very Happy
tanya.boyle

Well apparently it is coming to Australia sometime soon as well.
I certainly hope they keep the American accents for that!
liza_minelli

Yeah, Wicked'll be done with american accents otherwise the character songs wont work as well.

Ive never actually seen wicked, just sung the music with my singing teacher lol
Kragey

As was already said, there's no definitive accent for Oz, and as long as they can actually sing the song, I don't care what accent they use.
Clairvectra

My personal opinion is that they will do it with British accents if the cast is British. I see Wicked as something like "into the woods" was when that played in Britain, because it's not set in a specific part of the world the accents aren't set either

tickets go on sale tomorrow! GET IN!
cabaretfreak

I'll be happy camper if they don't keep switching accents, because if that happens, the production isn't going to be top-notch like the one in New York.

oh there is! ..if you speak about colloquial speech
rockyrocks666

i think it should be done with american accents... i dont know why, it just seems to fit.
diva!

i think it would be good with english accents
but i agree some of the songs wouldnt work...like the "oooahooooahoooooh" at the end of defying gravity isnt really a british thing to do so it wud sound bttr with american accents..

in THEORY it shud be british tho, we'll just have to see!
rockyrocks666

the anticipation is killing me
Madaboutmusicals87

Yeah but sure;y that's just because it was originally done in Broadway therefore with american accents and so its just what you are used to?

I'd much prefer English accents for the London production.
rockyrocks666

yeh i guess there is an element of that. but at the same time, the whole story of the original wizard of oz is set in america so why shouldnt wicked. im pretty sure they will use american accents, thats just my feeling
Mungostoffelees

Yeah they probably will but I still think thats stupid.
rockyrocks666

either way its gunna be an amzing show! hehehe
Salome

see it should be in american accents for the simple fact that L Frank Baum's Oz was a reflection of American society in the turn of the century.

Hello

I must be amongst vert tiny minority, but i will risk my opinion Very Happy .

I am not excited at all by Wicked, and i am not going to see it. I listened to "Popular", and i hated it.

Having said that, i think it should be in British accent.
rockyrocks666

should u really have an opinion if you hate it that much?
have you only listened to popular?
diva!

lol populars THE worst song in some ways to start ur wicked experience (altho it was mine ha) its really quite POPish and some people obviously hate that!

starting at the beginning (no-one mourns the wicked) would be the best place to start listening...glinda has an awesome voice in that Smile
rockyrocks666

i started my wicked experience with popular. i was obsessed with that song for a good couple of weeks and then the coolness fades and you move on to some of the better songs like defying gravity and no good deed. its one of those shows where at first u will just keep skipping to the tracks you like but aventually you will descover all the ones you skipped and love them.
vexation

It can be quite frustrating listening to amazing soundtracks like Wicked and think that i will never get the chance to see that (being from england). So i was really hoping it would come over even though i probably won't be able to see for a while but it should run.
I'd really like to see avenue q because it's funny and good and i'm curious about how they do the play with the puppets hope that goes to West End to.
vexation

Turns out Avenue q is going to west end . Shocked
Yay!
rockyrocks666

so's wicked..... obv
vexation

yeah i did get that seen as that was the title of the forum.
not quite that dim Neutral
rockyrocks666

soz, i think i just misunderstood your phrasing
