| Quote: | | On January 10, 2006 Eden Espinosa replaced actress Shoshana Bean as Elphaba, returning to the Gershwin Theatre once again. She left the show on October 8, 2006, being replaced by Chicago's original Elphaba, Ana Gasteyer. She is currently reprising this role alongside former co-star, Megan Hilty in the open-ended Los Angeles production of Wicked. She currently has a six month contract. |

I fianlly saw Wicked in L.A.!!!! It was really good! I have only listened to the Cast recording and I have loved since then. My parents had seen it three times without me so I finally got to see it! I was kind of let down though The First Act Was amazing! the second act kind of sucked. It was too sporatic and the music is the best in the second act but the show sucks. I did love all the references toi the Wizard of oz like:
"STOP WHINING DOWN THERE!!!! All you have to do is take off the slippers and you are free to go! *Closes Latch* What kind of sick girl would steal shoes from a dead woman! She must have been raised on a barn!
I still think it is a great show but now I know why there are people that really don't like it. explanation Second act!

Are those changes made for LA, or are you writing it off the top of your head?

That was a quote from the show. I guess this is an L.A. only thing?
Another one was Glinda saying "Just follow that yellow path!! (To Self) oh dear I am no good at giving directions"

I could have sworn it goes like this:
Elphaba: Oh, for Oz's sake, stop crying!!! I can't listen to it anymore! Oh, you want to see your Aunt Em and your Uncle What's-his-name again?! Then get those shoes off your feet!!! Little brat... takes a dead woman's shoes; must have been raised in a barn!
And this:
Glinda: That's right, you just take that one road, the whole time. (Waves offstage.) Oh, I hope they don't get lost. I'm so bad at giving directions.

I find it really interesting that you would say that while you enjoyed the first act, the second just "sucked." While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I've always enjoyed the second act so much more than the first, not that I don't enjoy them both, but there is something about Galinda and Elphaba as the characters we know so well from "Wizard" that has always made me love it; not that I don't think Defying Gravity isn't the best number in the show...
Again, just my opinion.

I asked if he was writing them off the top of his head and he said no. So I thought they had changed it.

Wicked was fun, but definitely forgettable - I don't think I've even remembered a single scene since I left the theatre on July 5th in L.A.
Any of the lessons or touching moments are too weak and uninteresting to make any lasting impact. The music is also not so memorable beyond the actual performance. The story is just...meh. Nothing to rave about.
Not saying it sucks. I enjoyed it while I was there, but unlike other shows I've seen, it's not something I've cared to 'take home with me.' I really wonder what exactly fans find so compelling.

i never understand people who try and understand why wicked fans are in love with it. the show has 5 companies currently, is still the top seller at the box office after 4 years and takes in well over a million every week, not to mention it is always filled to capacity.
clearly those who find it forgettable and (although you didnt say this but others have) a terrible musical are in the minority, so i think the focus should be spent wondering why exactly those who don't like wicked don't like it than wondering why those who do like it, like it.
but, if you really want to know, maybe the strong female leads are roles that many women and girls can identify with. maybe growing up on the story of the wizard of oz brings an air of familiarity to the audience. maybe the storyline of being an outsider for your beliefs or looks strikes a chord with others who feel that way. combine it all together and you have a great musical that is very meaningful for many people.
sorry for this mini essay here. but theater, music, and film snobs drive me crazy. just because something becomes "mainstream" or "popular" it loses all credibilty.
relax snobs, you are lucky because normal people are so dumb they will be attracted to anything glittery and sparkly. it takes truly knowledgable people, like you, to know what makes a good musical a good musical.

Please don't be an ------. Thanks. mod edit guess why NE
I was merely putting my sincere thoughts. I'm not a snob, nor a Wicked hater. I LIKED the show, but I just didn't see anything about it that was so compelling that would make me a rabid fan. It's called an opinion.

and the music is catchy and fun to listen too. Just wanted you to know you definitely got some support over here
and i don't really think that post was directed to you much at all quique. I think she was just talking about people in general who dislike wicked and don't understand why people do like it.
