Why no first name?

I've pondered this question for a while and I wondered what you all thought. Why do you think that Mrs. Lovett was never given a first name in Sweeney Todd? Everyone else has one but not she. Why?

She does. Her first name is Nellie.

Judge Turpin does not have a first name, neither does the Beadle.
BlondeBelter

Bob Turpin and George Beadle. =)

I may have to skim through the script and see if there's something.. Doubt it though.

It may be an awkward curiosity, but in the Norwegian 1989 (?) production, all the people in the ensamble are give names. I have never been able to find out if these are official names.

Have anyone else ever been listed as playing Peggy, Sachsenwürp (!), T. Chuck, Mad Max or Dan Fox in ST? All of these appear in this program...

(Idiotically, the Beggar Woman is also identified as Lucy, Todd's earlier wife Rolling Eyes )

Geez what a way to ruin the show for those audience members who've never seen it.

This is gonna sound STUPID, I'm sure, but I just assumed Nellie was a nickname? Kind of like "Millie" is for "Mildred". I've never known anyone, apart from the rapper, to be known officially as Nellie. Am I dumb for thinking this? haha.

I have a vague memory of a children's song about 'Nelly the Elephant', if that helps. At all. I can't see how it would, really Cool

I wikipedia'd it and apparently it is a real name

I have a late aunt whose birth name was Nellie.

While Nelly/Nellie is a real name, it is one of those that is a derivative or dimunition of another... in this case the original was Eleanor/Helen.
Mistress

Also, apparantly in other, earlier versions of the story, Lovett's name was Margery...

^ Thats weird...

I have the book by Hugh Wheeler, and her first name's Nellie. It's mentioned a couple of times.

Yes, in the musical by Sondheim her first name is most definitely Nellie. In different versions of the legend though it is Margery.
