Why Joanne?

In "I'll Cover You (reprise)", why does Joanne come in with the "With a thousand sweet kisses I'll Cover You" part? It's always baffled me. She's kinda unrelated in the Angel-Collins relationship, and she is the least connected of the group.

So...why Joanne?

Good harmony? Razz

She's not completely unrelated in the Collins/Angel relationship - she was there at the night at the Life Cafe (which seems to have bonded everyone together), she helps them when they're trying to break back into the building. Just beacuse we don't see Angel and Joanne interact, doesn't mean they never have Smile I mean, we don't see a whole lot of interaction between Marueen and Roger, but we KNOW they know each other, and were possibly close at one time.

I always figured it was because she admired their relationship so much (her bit in "Goodbye Love" about killing for what Angel had), and since she recently "lost" Maureen, her solo is just an outburst of emotion. Like, I guess this is a way to put it:

It's like when you hear a song that deals with something you can relate to, maybe a break-up or something, and you think about what it means to you, and that person who broke your heart, and you have flashbacks, and you maybe cry etc. That's why I think it's Joanne. She misses Maureen so much, and she can relate to what Collins is going through, AND she wishes Maureen was what Angel was for Collins (selfless, caring, giving etc).

Roger and Mimi aren't broken up yet, Mark is too cold for to have an outpour of emotion, Maureen is kind of above crying in public like that (in my opinion anyways), and no one else would really fit. Does that make ANY sense? lol, sorry if not.

Maureen and Joanne had just broken up, and Angel's death made them realize just how short their time on this earth may be and they need to make the most of it (with each other).

Very interesting theories, everybody.
And yeah, Jman, that made sense. Razz Don't worry.
Very nice theories, and a lot of insight. Very Happy Thanks!

I was wondering the very same thing. I have to go check now. I guess in the film they chose to use Tracie Thoms instead of a solist becuase they did not want to introduce another charter that really has nothing to do with the plot. Give Joanne more of a part. And Tracie Thoms has an amazing voice. That range amazes me! I mean I can hit her high notes. But thats all. The fact that she can sing those high notes and then sing the notes in Take me or Leave me and Tango Maureen which are lower and sounds like there to be sung useing the cheast voice. It amazes me everytime.

But I agree with everything said above, Jman,Actingdude, and Sypynx.

OBC lyric booklet lists it as Joanne & Soloists.

in case anyone still cares, i just watched that scene from the Filmed Live On Broadway video and it was Gwen Stewart (aka Soloist #1) whom began the "thousand sweet kisses". i cannot say if thats how it was originally done, but thats how They did it.

I know that gave Gwen an awesome opportunity to shine, but I love when Joanne does it. It just seems to fit.

Yeah, I got to thinking about it from the OBC booklet and then in Filmed Live on Broadway used Soloist #1, so I really didn't know.
I also prefer Joanne, by the way.
Ulkis

It's Joanne 'cause they're ALL friends.

(This is something that bugged me too about Chris Columbus' comments that they made Angel and Mimi previous aquaintances in the movie because otherwise the friendship didn't make sense. They all become friends over the course of the year in the show. Is it all developed well? No, but it's there.)

Aaaand somehow this turned into a rant. Sorry.

I'm assuming you based that off the movie, because in the live production Joanne is hardly there because she's loading Maureen's equipment and taking care of technical things related to Maureen's show. She only comes in and out of the number a few times.
