Why is it;

That EVERYONE loves the song "I'd give my life for you"?
Now I KNOW that it's Kim's signature song
And I DO agree, that it IS good, but it's not THAT good.
In fact, it's one of my least favorites of the show.

Why can't we all pour ourselves over songs like "I Still Believe" and "Fall Of Saigon"?

And for some reason I have an odd obsession with "The Money Is Yours".
What Kim says in it is so powerful.

"How my family were bodies who's faces were gone?" Utterly disturbing and graphic, but MAN that one gets you!

This was just me, pondering, really.

I totally agree. I am equally oddly obsessed with that song...
Enchanted

LMAO You quoted my typo, damnit!
I always switch that word when I sing that song.
Between was and were.

"HOW MY FAMILIES WERE BODIES WHO'S FACES WERE GONE"
"HOW MY FAMILIES WAS BODIES WHO'S FACES WERE GONE"

Lmao.
But then after the 'was' I realize I sang it wrong.
metaphor17

hah, I didn't catch that! didn't read carefully I guess.

but we all knew what you meant Laughing
Enchanted

ANYWAYS THOUGH...

Yes.
That song is soooooo goooooood.
All the duet and group songs in this musical are spectacular.

I actually think the solo ones suck.

[inserts more pondering]

You who i cradled in my arms
You asking as little as you can
Little snip of a little man
I know i'd give my life for you

You didn't ask me to be born
You why should you learn of war or pain?
To make sure you're not hurt again
I swear I'd give my life for you

I've tasted love beyond all fear
And you should know it's love
that brought you hear
And in one perfect night
when the stars burned liek new,
I knew what I must do

I'll give you a million things I'll never own
I'll give you a world to conquer when you're grown
You will be who you want to be
You, can choose whatever heaven grants
As long as you can have your chance
I swear i'll give my life for you

Sometimes I wake up
reaching for him
I feel his shadow brush my head
But there's just moonlight on my bed

Was he a ghost was he a lie?
That made my body laugh and cry?
Then by my side the proof i see
his little one, gods of the sun,
bring him to me!

You will be who you want to be
You, can choose whatever heaven grants
As long as you can have your chance
I swear i'll give my life for you

No one can stop what i must do
I swear i'll give my life for you!

Yeah.
Basically all this is, is Kim worsening Tam's hearing, by yelling to him, that when he gets older he can 'be who he want's to be'.

OH, EXCCCUUSSSSEEE MEEE, I forgot, she sings a little excerpt about Chris.

*rolls eyes*
Yeah, the message of this song's kinda dumb.

Holy crap, I feel so mean today.
*signs off*

I love "I'd Give My Life For You"...a, because Lea is an AMAZING singer and she just owns the song, and b, its such a pretty (and sad) message...she's saying that she'll do whatever it takes to ensure her son has a happy life.
Enchanted

Yes but;

a. Lea Salonga is not the ONLY singer of "I'd Give My Life For You"
and b. Yeah, that's a nice message, but. There really are better messages in this musical.

I don't mean to be harsh or rude or anything.
I just have my own side.

Well, you're doing a good job without putting forth the effort.

^ was going to say something to that effect. Thank you, Very Angry Woman.
Enchanted

I'm not even sure whether to be offended or take that as a compliment.
So I'll totally act as if I never read it ......?
What Is This Feeling?

I totally agree, that and Why God Why are my least favorite songs in the whole show, honestly. I might like Why God Why better if I didn't have the stupid Chris from my OLC recording. Can't think of his name right now.
Enchanted

I'm not fond of Why God Why either.

It's also strange, that it's hard for me to decide if I like or dislike The heat is on in Saigon. It's totally the classic happy, party, 'Master of the House' song, but some of the lyrics are DISCUSTING. (Actually, most the lyrics in the show are nausiating, so I shouldn't really pin-point this particular song) but really, that song's a bit out there. I love the actual music though.
Amy_Vocalist

It's ment to show the seedy sleazy side of saigon, portraying that no love can come from that sordid place, which makes kim and chris's love seem much more highlighted (that's not exactly the right word but I'm having a brain fart)

Oh I totally agree with that statement. Definately. The setting isn't classsy, elegant, or sophisticated. I can definately see the majority of the charachters, sets(Dreamland only) , and lyrics made to pin point something so beatiful in a place of disgust, war, pain and filth.

Because taste in music is relative? Then add one's personal experiences and emotion into it and it exponentially becomes even more relative.

I think most people do. I for one relate to and love many of the songs, not just one or two.

It did me. It's the first song ever that made me cry when I first saw Miss Saigon, precisely because of those words. Even though I was already familiar with the music, the lyrics, and the story, that song hit me hard.
lianneMiserables516

oh, i also love "igmlfy" but not much obssesed with it.
as per today, my favorite miss saigon song is
"the heat is on in saigon" lol
What Is This Feeling?

I love Now Thay'Ve Seen Her, The Fall of Saigon, I Still Believe, Sun and Moon. Also, If You Want To Die in Bed, The American Dream, I'd Give My life For You are also some of my other favorites as well. I don't know if I ever mentioned those last three, or not, LOL.
Dinah84

I love "I'd Give My Life For You". I think it's a lovely number and although Lea's version is my favourite, I love hearing it sung by Monique Wilson and Joanna Ampil, too, who are also wonderful Kim's. It is my favourite song from MS, along with "Now That I've Seen Her", "This Money's Yours", "The Heat Is On", "The Fall of Saigon", and Kim's suicide. My VERY favourite song, though, is one that was actually cut from the show - "Too Much For One Heart". It's absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking and more powerful than any of the numbers that made it into the final cut. I'm really surprised they scrapped it. I also like "Little God of My Heart" better than the final version of Kim's suicide. It has a bigger impact, IMO.

I'm not a fan of Why God Why...the only time I've liked it has been when John Barrowman sings it and even then, I enjoy it more for his voice rather than the lyrics. The song feels a bit bland and "meh" to me, for some reason. Like it should have been more, somehow.

Simon Bowman AKA Mr. "I Have a Vibrato That Sounds Like I'm in An Earthquake." The whole part of Chris is thrown off on that recording because of him. Honestly, I like all the Engineer's stuff and even "Bui Doi" above Chris's stuff.

I adore "Heat Is On." It's my personal favorite of Boublil and Schonberg's "party" songs. I love love love those opening chords. And I like the fact that if you weren't listening well to the lyrics, you wouldn't see what a sleazy song it is, much the same way American history always glances over the travesties in Vietnam. Maybe that's just me reading into it. Rolling Eyes

"Bui Doi" is another favorite of mine, as is "Sun and Moon" and "The American Dream" and I have an odd obsession with "Last Night of the World."
What Is This Feeling?

odd? Doesn't everyone like The Last Night of the World?! Hahaaaha. I use to think The Heat Is On in Saigon was great, but after obsessing over miss Saigon so much, I came to know all the lyrics. And , I see how Boubil and Shoenberg were trying to show how a love could spring from such a sleazy, dreadful setting. But the heat is on in Saigon is kinda like corny. But I understand why it sorta is. Part songs? Isn't there only like 2? That Boubil and Shoenberg wrote? But I understand why some people who prefer it.
LittleGavroche

There's a few of the party songs. All in the same vein, "Master of the House," "Boy'll Be Boys," [from The Pirate Queen] "The Heat Is On..." I might put "What A Waste" in the same category... they're all somewhat similar in my opinion.

Corny, yes. But corny is usually fun. Very Happy

I didn't think anybody had mentioned, "The Last Night of the World."
What Is This Feeling?

See, I have neither seen or listened to a note of The Pirate Queen, but I heard it is the teamest weakest acchievement, if that is correct to say? The New York post review amused me: "Sadly Boubil and Shoenberg have missed the boat, and opted for a Riverdance approach" or something to that affect. I could see myself liking The Pirate Queen, and I didn't know it was going to be such a failure capitalistically and critically. So....... but going back to it . The Heat Is on in Saigon is a good party song.
LittleGavroche

Weakest, probably, but because of what it's compared to, almost anything would be weak Laughing

I admit, I did like the show, the music was perhaps not as memorable as their other achievements, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. And the plot was, in my opinion, was one of the best, in terms of character development and all that jazz. Oh, and the dance was just... glorious.
What Is This Feeling?

Lol, oh I see. Usually Boubil and Shoenberg aren't known for their dance shws at all. That'swhy it sorta got me that this one, when I heard about it first, while it was in previews, was heavly filled with dance spectacle, I was shocked.
