Why does he love Christine? [in the movie]In the movie we see the whole Eric as a boy : Madame Giry rescue thing. My question is why does he love Christine not Madame Giry? Surely that's far more realistic in this version.And why is he so young still roughly 25 years down the line? He only looked about 30 whereas she's supposedly married, had Meg and been widowed in that time. BTW I only saw it for the first time on tv last night. |

Because the script told him to. That's the best I could come up with. I would say her good looks, but that would give me a big head.

hehehe, yeah, it does seem like he only loves her for that reason... there is no other logical reason for it.
Any other ideas? |

I always figured it was for her voice, even in the movie version.
Really just pulling ideas out of my bum here. |

I don't think that the Phantom 'loves' Christine as we would love someone. His view of 'love' is different than ours (or Raoul's). He worships her. I think that that is the better term. Do you understand what I mean? I don't think he loves her in the way as: "Let's get married, let's have babies." But more that he wants her by his side to be able to love her in a way, love her voice, her kindness, her sweetness.... Adore her, worship her.
It's kind of hard to explain. |
||

That makes sense, like he is obsessed with her, not in love. [though I still don't see why he doesn't love Madam G.... in the film version.]
That does make me wonder though... did he pick her for her voice? Was her voice always good or has she only improved since him becoming her tutor [which seems to be the case]. In that case, if her voice was rubbish before, why pick a dancer? Maybe I'll have to get the book.

Maybe the Phantom did hve a thing on Madame Giry, but once she got married and had Meg he turned his attentions elsewhere. Then comes along Christine who is depressed, missing her father, and the Phantom sympathizes with her because he may see a kindred spirit. So he teached Christine how to sing, he falls in love with her, and the rest is history.

Good dancers are spellbinding. The Phantom could have been watching a rehearsal from his balcony or in the rafters or somewhere, saw Christine dance, notice her lighting a candle for her father and how heart broken she is, give her voice lessons, and fall in "love" with her. For someone who has only ever had Madame Giry and Christine be nice to him, its easy to assume he's in love.
Thats all speculation by the way, I actually just saw the movie on Sunday. |

Yes I do agree. Furthermore, having Madame Giry helping him doesn't make anyone fall in love with that person per se... |

And, I was watching it last night with subtitles, and some of the lyrics were "Since the first time I heard you sing, I've needed you with me, to serve me, to love me." (Or something like that) So he did love her voice, or her voice along with her dancing.

It is actually: I have brought you to the seat of sweet music's throne to this kingdom where all must pay homage to music music You have come here, for one purpose, and one alone Since the moment I first heard you sing, I have needed you with me, to serve me, to sing, for my music ... my music ... So yes, that does quite explain his obsession, his goal of bringing Christine there to be his lifelong companion and his "love". |

Gotta love the eternal "why does he love her?" question. (Oh, and Aimee? It's Erik. With a K. Not a C. Not to be rude, but it is.) The Phantom is obsessed with Christine. As in obsessed. I think it can be construed as love. It really comes through in all its complete, terrifying rawness during Point of No Return. That's a song about making love, if anything is. He loves her in an obsessive way that can devour her. He wants to possess her completely, and yet when he tries, she sort of crumbles. I've always thought that if she did stay with him, he would have glutted himself on her, and suddenly discovered that he was destroying her. As for why he loves her - I think it has to do with her beauty. The Phantom is obsessed with beauty. He strives to create it, to preserve it. Deep down, he detests his own ugliness. And he loves her for her beauty. |

Maybe he was bored (all that hiding from the world, your only companion as Mme. Giry...) He's not going to fall in love with the one sole that he is able to talk to in the world from a very young age. Would he want to spend the rest of his life with someone he is so dependant on? Would she?
He needed a project. Something to wile away the hours (conferring with the flowers...sorry, sidetracking). Hmm, which of the girls to choose? Hmm, which? Ah, look, here's a young girl...aww, she's struggling as her father grows more ill...aww, she's so eager to be a singer...but not quite up to scratch... Say, why don't I help her on the road to success? Yes, yes, she's progressing along beautifully. Say, we make a great pair. She the face, I the voice. Yes, a pair. A couple. A twosome. *Lovey Dove eyes* Just a thought... |

Alough I find bexs point very correct I think it might have been somthing else.
I have always looked at the phantom useing Christine in two differant ways. the main way he uses her is to get his voice out there. In the show there is strong references to him beliveing that through christines singing its his voice and/or his music out on the stage. By Giving her his voice he believes that she belongs to him. The second way he uses Christine is for his Obsessive love. I think the Obsession ties the two uses together. Throughout the whole show he battles for Christine mainly because he truly thinks he owns her because he feels he gave her his voice. It isnt untill the end that he truly feels what love is and realises what he has done. Just a differant view of it all. |

I've seen the movie once and the show yesterday... so...
I think the Phantom is in love with Christine, but like many have said he's obsessed with her... infauated really. It's very clear when he sings "All I Ask of You Reprise" - he's suffering because he loves Christine so much and she just doesn't see it. I mean, I think she does understand he's attracted to her, but it's because of his deformity that keeps them seperated (though she does give him a really sweet kiss in the end of the show). I think she loved him too, but it was a different kind of love, y'know? She looked up to his greatness, I think... like a teacher/student sort of love (man, that sounds wrong, I'm so sorry). Hehe, DD, I like your theory there... somehow that could work out. |

Tee hee... y'know, after watching both the show and the movie, the latter more times than I can count, I almost agree with you. I could definitely see Meg being their child. I don't think it ever explains who Meg's father was... or does it? Maybe I've just missed that scene? |

Well my thought i bought the dvd and it has an extra song called no one would listen where phantom sings about how he longed to be normal and teach the world but no on would listen.... apart form christine it says " she saw my loneliness, shared in my emptiness," so i think its because they felt the same in some respect

I don't know if it's really Christine he loves. I think that he's in love with beauty, because it's something he'll never posses. He wants to hide behind her beauty so the world can't see him. Just like when Christine sings "I am the mask you wear..." He loves the beautiful, and he writes beautiful music. I think it could have been any pretty girl that he would fall in love with. Christine was just an easy target because of her vulnerability. But that's just my humble opinion.

~Love~I think he fell in love with her voice first. He really also wanted to be loved for himself and not his looks. I don't think he was in love with madame giry because she was like a mother to him. You can't marry your mother! |
||

But Giry was a young girl when she 'rescued,' Phantom, so surely they would have fallen in love. I think it's very badly planned in the film.
And about the Phantom being sexually frustrated Bex? Totally agree - must be hard seeing someone of the female species after years and years who has a push up bra (or corset in this case) |
