Why does everyone like this song so much? So, "If I Can't Love Her" is winning the elimination game by leaps and bounds, but, I have to ask... Why?
I guess my opinion is different from EVERYONE elses. I've never really liked that song. always skipped it when listening to a cast album. Partly because I couldn't really sing along, partly because the first time I heard it I laughed (London cast, "And then that witch was GONE? And left me in this STATE?"...ehhh... you have ot hear it).
I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, but please intelligently explain to me (persuade me, if you will) why it is the BEST song in the show, as reflected by the elimination game.

It's a beautiful and dramatic song.

I think it's possibly the best song in the show...definatley the best original song. I love it...the sweeping phrases, the key changes...beautiful.

Are you sure you're not confusing "If I Can't Love Her" with the shorter "How Long Must This Go On", hun? Cause that line there is from the latter, and yes, THAT song I usually pass up. But "If I Can't Love Her" is a gorgeous song that the Beast really needed, which is why I like it. =)
When you really listen to and read the lyrics, I think it sums up the Beast perfectly. This boy growing into a man, who knows now what he did years ago was wrong, what he just did to Belle was wrong, and how he regrets it all. Not to mention on top of that regret and shame, there is this urgency to break this curse as his castle falls deeper and deeper into it. It's a..."growing" moment for him. Really starting to realize that he has to change, sooner and for the better. It's a big turning point song that he never received in the original film, and the musical gave it to us.

What you have said is from "How Long Must This Go On?" go back and listen to them both and see which one you are actually talking about.
And hey it could be worse "Something There" could be winning like it was at one point.
"If I Can't Love Her" is the most gorgeous and dramatic songs in the show. It's go some many emotions in in one song.

But honestly, Something There was his turning point in the FILM, as well as his only singing moment. That was the moment where he turned around and had the realization knocked in, and still is the moment when he realizes that he LOVES Belle, so would it STILL have been that bad?

sorry, sorry, yes it is How Long Must This Go On, I guess I still associate them together.
I don't see how IICLH is a plot changing song, nearly the whole idea of the song is said/summed up in the first phrase of it (when it starts the "If I Can't Love Her" tune). basically, "If this wonderful beautiful girl can't change my selfish ways, nothing will and it's hopeless". Right? and then he just keeps saying it over and over again in a slightly different way. I dunno. I haven't been convinced yet. It's just a show-off song for the actor playing Beast. the movie conveyed everything in a wonderfully animated look of agony from the Beast, and you just KNOW that he realized what a huge mistake he just made and how he regrets it.
Something There is my favorite song from the movie. IT moves the story and conveys the thoughts of all major characters in a lovely way. In the show I still like it above half the other songs.
Tyler- Mightn't you be just a little bit biased, having played the Beast and all?

It's safe to say we agree to disagree, and that's perfectly cool! =)

I loved the song and knew the power of the song long before I ever played Beast. Just because I played a role doesn't mean I'm going to be bias....I think "How Long Must This Go On?" is useless.
And the same could be said if you thought "Adelaide's Lament" was the funniest song in Guys and Dolls.

Of course!
I see your point about the glimpse of 'inside the beast" and how he is changing, etc., for the point of character and plot developement, I just am not drawn to it as a musical piece. Like I said, I find it sort of repetitive.
BUT yeah, I guess I just disagree then.

But think of what a crummy Act I Finale it would be!
"She can't change me. Nothing can."
AAAAAAAND Curtain.
