Speaking objectively, ALW is really smart in knowing what people usually like to see, what attract people's attention easily, and what can interest the critics and the general public.

Ehh. Who cares, really? Think of all the Tonys that Sondheim's won in comparison to ALW. I'm not entirely sure of the numbers, but really, I'm sure it doesn't matter.

How did Spamalot beat Piazza?

How did Avenue Q beat Caroline?

How did Ain't Misbehavin' beat On the Twentieth Century (sorry, biased)?

Harumph.

The biggest question has always been how did Fosse beat Parade? ?!

To go back to Ciaron's topic though, Phantom was on a role that year and the Tony's like to showcase anything that they think will help bring more tourists to New York, and also to reward shows that have drawn huge audiences. Mediocritys that draw large crowds(Cats, as well as Phantom) wil usually win the Tony.

Besides that, only some critics at the time raved about the show(Clive Barnes in the New York Times wrote a strong positive review of the show, but many other critics gave the show mixed reviews. Almost everybody recognized the great score, but the book was widely attacked in reviews in the 80s.)

This is one of those shows that in general was more appreciated later, than when it first came out, so it's good that it still managed to win best score over Phantom and also Joanna Gleason won. which was also very good.
