Why are most Tevyes so plump?

I guess casting directors like to follow the physical type of Zero Mostel, but still...why are so many Tevyes so plump? Isn't this supposed to be a poor man who barely knows where his next meal is coming from?

My Trek fandom aside, I'd have liked to see Leonard Nimoy when he played Tevye. Not only for his acting chops, but it makes sense to have a skinny Tevye!

I know what you mean.
I don't know why they cast them so plump as you say
Mine was VERY plump personally!

Well, even though he was poor, he was a dairy farmer, right?
Dairy gives you big, strong bones.
And think of the time period.
Although he did work a little, most of the little chores were done by the wives, and he did drink.
Doesn't drinking give you a beer belly or some nonsense like that?

I always pictured Tevye as bigger because he's a warm, family guy who has the best intentions. He's jolly...like a Jewish Santa.

My real question is... why are Golde's always fat?
Every production I've seen has had a noticeably overweight Golde... yet, in "If I Were a Rich Man," Tevye alludes to her being too thin (if he were a rich man, she'd have a "proper double chin," indicating that she does not have one in reality). It makes no sense.

Norma Crane, the movie Golde, was thin. So was the late Maria Karnilova, the OBC Golde, IIRC from pictures I saw of her; and Rebecca Holden in a 1996 touring production that starred Theo Bikel.

If Tevye had a "biddy biddy bum"

Well... though this may seem like generalization, many basses who have strong, booming voices, are usually a little bit bigger in stature. Ya know?

Tevye needs to demand the stage as a big character in both heart and size...

Every live production I've seen, that's true...well, except the one where that anti-scientology enthusiast is playing Tevye, that Golde was quite thin. The big annoyance I have is when Golde is too nice....ugh, I hate that...

Anywho, I'm playing Tevye and I'm 300 pounds...what's the problem with being big? lol

Same here. When I did Fiddler, the Golde acted as if she was a Disney princess instead of a overworked, stern housewife/mother. She even curled her hair in ringlets for the performances!!! And did the director care? .....No.
Buff Daddy

Two words - dairy fed!

Our Golde was petite as well, so over all good casting!

For Golde, I think the reason they tend to be heavier is a stereotype that they are harsher, bitchier.

Well, in high school, the 'heavier' actors look 'older' so they are casted as the older characters.

However, do you really think a woman who's birthed 5 kids is really going to have the body of one of the daughters? Or that a man old enough to have 5 daughters and is struggling to support them is going to have time to work out?

When I did Fiddler we had one plump Tevye and one thin one, same with Golde's. Since it was a children's theater production I don't think she chose them based on their body types, just singing abilities.

But yeah I'm not sure why exactly but I sort of agree delovely, it sort of makes him seem more jolly.
