Who should play the Leading Player in the movie?

This is just a list of possibilities, some bad some good, just some name actors who have experience in musicals and might work. Just to see what y'all think. Ben Vareen is not on the list because he has already said he does not really wish to return to the character.
Tom

None of the above. Thank you.

Mathew Broderick, while great, doesnt seem to me to be able to sing quite high enough for the leading player (I could be wrong...I've only ever heard him sing up to an F i think...both in the music man and in the producers).

And...ewan as the leading player? Hmmm...no.
I have no idea if he can sing, but I think Johnny Depp could own the part.

Even though I have seen the older movie version with Ben Vereen (who was AWESOME but probably can't do it now...) I can't see wayne Brady being even considered for the leading player...I don't think he has the...thing..

For some reason I get a weird mental picture of Leonardo Dicaprio from the aviator...the kind of slicked back blonde hair and suit with the sort of 'evil' look.

Ewon Mcgregor might be good but I really have no idea...I only hope they pick a good choice... maybe someone from chicago would want to come into it?

Ahh...no clue... ^__^

Is there any recent news about the movie? Like a date or something?

Matthew Broderick sang a G in H2$...but he just looks too boyish for the part.

Ewan McGregor? Could definitely do it, if he's a good enough dancer. He's one hell of an actor and could play a really convincing LP. His voice isn't traditional, but Ben Vereen's wasn't really either.

I never thought about Alan Cumming! I bet he would do a great job, though I don't know too much about him.

JESSE L MARTIN

Wonderful in RENT dazzling smile, handsome face, sings , dances. IT's HIS!!

God, I wish Johnny sang. He doesn't like to, though I heard he sang a little in Cry Baby. I don't think he can really dance either...

But if it were just acting--he'd be amazing.

ben vereen has some mighty big shoes to fill and i really dont think any of those guys are able to dance, sing, and act as well as ben in that part.

In my opinion, if they did do a modern movie, I bet they would do a female leading player. Many of the community theaters and schools that do the show use a girl for the part, and it would definitely set it apart from the original movie and show.

The question then becomes, what female could play the part of the Leading Player in the movie? I'm thinkin Idina Menzel could be a perfect LP. Opinions?

I gotta agree with Salome.

Jesse L. Martin would be amazing! Plus I would be happy looking at him and his gorgeous smile for a few hours

...but wasn't Alan Cumming the LP in a rendition of Cabaret? I think I have that cd. Well I just can't help getting him out of my head, so I think he'd be good.

To Pippin1721, I have done Pippin twice, once with a male, and once with a female as LPs, and I don't know how I'd like to have a female play it (thought I DO love Idina). In my production, the female LP acted as a challenging love for Pippin in competition with Katherine and it kind of distracted away from the story (even though it was a segment we put in after "Simple Joys"). I don't know, I just would like sticking to the assigned gender.
Monsieur D'Arque

All i can say is this: as of today, LP is typically a role for a high tenor or female. Should Jesse L. Martin play the part in his typical style, with even the tiniest bit of Collins flair, the role will suddenly become one of the most coveted bass roles in current musical theatre. What a change...
dramaluvergurl92

Not sure if he sings or not...but I would see Jim Carry in the role...

kinda....sorta....just a thought
dramaluvergurl92

But I agree with everyone else...

Jonny Depp would be reallly goood

and

I love Jesse L. Martin!!! He would be really good too....
Slash2006

Ok, Obviously some people are retarded. For those of you that don't know the show, the leading player is the narrator who is a tenor and a great dancer. He's also needs to be out there with his presence. You can't just pick your favorite actor and thats that. When I was in a production of Pippin, our leading player was perfect for the role. He nailed it. He falls close to an Alan Cumming of the list given and none of the others. For others perfect for the leading player, Picture Ben Vereen(who originated the role on Broadway and won the Tony for his performance as the Leading Player), or Joel Grey even. They're too old now and wouldn't be able to handle it, so of the list given at the top, I would say Alan Cumming and just maybe to Wayne Brady, but a definite no to the rest.
Monsieur D'Arque

I don't know about the Leading Player, but after listening to his albums and seeing Wedding Singer, i think Stephen Lynch would be a fun Pippin. Besides, then he could (nay, should) play a guitar on "Extraordinary." Besides, his naturally sweet tenor voice could do a little bit of his Adam Sandler pseudo-rocker belt in the song, which would give it a definite comic edge at the end.

I agree, yes yes yes, I agree. If he didn't do it I think Alan would be a good choice.
dramaluvergurl92

new idea

duhhhhhh

Ben Verren

lol

kinda joking

but hey...
Silver_Stag

I agree with the Jesse L. Martin vote, but...

Ewan McGregor could play the scary, menacing side of the Leading Player very well.

>_> <_< ... Twisted Evil <--Ewan as LP ... Shocked <--Me being scared.
Gazelle

Wow...i think i just died a little inside...

Ben Vereen of course

i wouldn't mind Jesse...if he could dance.
