Who should I play? So, there is a company near me auditioning for Fiddler soon.
I've just turned 16, acting is my talent, but I can sing too. Mezzo-soprano, and I'm an alright dancer.
I'm 5'5.
I'm not very familiar with the show. I'm assuming I should go for Chava because of the age, but I'm not really a dancer..
Help please

hey!
well height is a big thing in fiddler on the roof because you can't have a "little chava" that's taller that the Tzeitel or Hodel. I'm having fiddler on the roof auditions too, and I'm going out for Chava because I'm really short (I hope not too short). Mezzo Soprano should work for Chava, I mean she has a few high notes. If your capable of singing really high notes, then go out for Tzeitel or Hodel. The dacing Chava does in the movie is not too hard, it's just a few steps here and there. Just look graceful
Watch the movie...that should help and pick who you want to be.
I say Chava, but that's just my opinion.

None of the sisters sings particularly high. Hodel goes the highest with an E. And none of them goes below a B. So pretty much any voice type could sing any of the three. Though if you have the human resources to pick and choose, it's nice if there can be a progression of vocal color in the sisters, just like there is in height.
The height of the three older sisters is relative to each other. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the stair-step method will be used to help keep track of what order they go in. At 5'5", you could go a few different ways. If Tzietel is 5'10", you're probably golden for Chava. On the other hand, if she's 5"6", they will probably need to cast Chava around 5'2" or so. It all depends.
As far as age, all three are in their teens. Tzietel is "not yet twenty," so Hodel is probably about seventeen, and the general consensus is that Chava is probably fifteen at the beginning and has turned sixteen by the end. At age sixteen, you could probably play any of them, but again, it depends. If Tzietel is actually in her early twenties playing down, the casting of the three will be different than if she is sixteen playing up. (Then again, if you listen to the OBC, they are all clearly in their mid-twenties at LEAST. So you never know.)
Knowing you, I would most likely put you as a Chava, but you could probably swing Hodel, too. Tzietel is possible, but the least ideal for you, I think.
Don't worry about the dancing. The Chava ballet can be as intense or simple as the ability of the actress calls for. It tends to be very simple, like in the movie, but then again you occasionally see her on pointe, too. What it comes down to is that they will choreograph it to fit who they have. Being a great dancer would give you an edge, but it isn't necessary by ANY means.

Thank you both!
I think I will audition for chava specificaly, but tell them I would be content with any of the daughters, and see how it goes.
And thanks for easing my fears about the dancing, and when I looked at the audition site, it didn't say anything about a dancing/movement audition or clothes or anything, so I'll see what happens when I book an audition. Nice to know being a good dancer isn't necessary
So with that help, would someone be able to help me with an audition song? I was thinking maybe "Home" from Batb, or something like that.
Cheerio!
