Who Saw the Movie...what did you think?

I went to see it last night and it was sold out! The 9:40 showing sold out at 6:00pm...I couldn't believe it, that never happens at my theatre. I was really bummed. So, it'll be almost a week before I get another chance to go, but would love to hear what others thought about it Smile

I thought it was excellent, of course a few tweaks were inevitable to make it cinematic, but they all worked Smile

I thought the movie was very effective. All of the cinematography (lighting, set, and overall design) fit the story perfectly. I thought every actor was BRILLIANT in their roles (I couldn't see it any other way!) The chemistry they all had on stage seemed very real. The music, which I wasn't familiar to before seeing the movie, was very catchy and moving. I don't think it's ever been that quiet in a movie theater that you could hear the projector. **** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ****

Some girls in the audience cried when Angel died and the whole graveyard/funeral scene.

Where did you see it?

I distinctly heard the projector when I saw it.
candleshoe

I mean the projector putting the MOVIE on the screen in the theatre.

That's what I meant, did you think I meant Mark's projector?

Surprised
broadwayfreak67

The movie was great.
It's hard to bring a musical like that to the screen SUCESSFULLY, but it all worked out, and I loved it.
Beautif1Disgrace

I loved it! I was afraid I would be let down, because I was really excited about it, but I definitely wasn't. I've seen it twice so far... lol Very Happy
mimi005

Joanne was a new cast member, that was it.

Loved it.

i loved it i saw it the day it came out. seriously it was awesome. but i havent seen the show. im sure if i had i would think of it differently but still, amazing.
musicluvr77

I was surprised how faithful it was to the original stage version. I felt that they took some parts out, but added other things in that made a viewer who knew the musical feel like everything was there.

That just made no sense...I can't think of how to describe what I'm trying to say. I thought it was an amazing movie and I can't wait to go see it again tomorrow!

I just hope I don't have the same AUDIENCE MEMBERS! But this is not the place for THAT rant...

I saw it the afternoon it opened and it was absolutely excellent. I enjoyed it more than the OBC, and that's saying a lot considering the fact that the OBC and online librettos are the only exposure I have to the show (surprising, I know). But I think that's because Rob Cavallo's a better producer, and he didn't just put what worked onstage down in one take.

I was hoping that the band would be playing on the street somewhere. Like they do in the show.

Wilson was amazing (Oscar nod? Yes?)

Benny had no redeeming qualities.

I'm still singing "La Vie Boheme."

Rock out, everybody!!

As cool as that would be, I think it'd also be a little...well...weird. Depending on how it was done, I guess.

Loves it!!!!

I have to say i absolutly loved the movie. A large group of friends and I went to see the midnight showing after we got out of rehearsal for our production of Godspell. We had been in practice for like 5 hours, then went to see a movie at midnight, but no one, i repeat no one fell asleep. All of it rocked my socks way off, and I esp. loved hearing the songs done differently then what I'm used to, i love the soundtrack to the movie!!!!

I adored the movie. It was amazing and surpassed my expectations. All of the original cast was fabulous, Tracie Thoms was an outstanding Joanne, and Rosario Dawson didn't disappoint me either (which came as a bit of a surprise). Overall great, I missed stuff from the show but felt they compensated for it with added scenes. "Take Me or Leave Me" and "La Vie Boheme" were so incredible!
One Song Glory

I was impressed by the film - I knew before going to see it that it wasn't going to be the easiest musical to adapt to the big screen. There were some things I didn't like, such as keeping song lyrics as dialogue... it came off as a wee bit trite. Also, showing Roger going off to Santa Fe - those bits could've been left out. Other than that, I was happy with the outcome - Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal's voices still rock and I think Rosario Dawson was an excellent Mimi. Jesse L. Martin was the main reason why I wanted to see the movie (among being a big fan of Jonathan Larson), and he didn't disappoint at all! I love his singing and I even convinced my parents to listen to the soundtrack.

My favorite scene, by far, was the Life Cafe - "La Vie Boheme." I love that song so much and I just wanted to join in the dancing!

i just wanted to say something about the thing with roger actually being in sante fe during that little snippet of the movie. a lot of the ppl i went to see it with said it was totally unnecessary but i think it was an awesomething to do. on stage you can't exactly show that roger is in sante fe and mark is in new york at the same time, they just go to seperate sides of the stage and we have to assume that he left and when roger and mark come back together that he returned to new york, but in the movie we can actually tell that he was gone and he missed his old life. i think it was afab idea, so go movie!!!

I had never listened to the music of RENT before I saw the movie, and so I didn't have a lot of room to be disappointed. I, therefore, loved it. And even now after I've been listening to the original broadway cast recording, I still love it. I noticed a lot of spoken dialogue that is set to music in the original recording, but I didn't know the music that well when I saw it, so it didn't bother me too much. I kinda liked it. I loved "La Vie Boheme", I just wanted to dance with them. And "Tango: Maureen" was fantastic! Anthony Rapp looked really good in that scene. Laughing
theatrefanatic

i left the theatre shaking

loved it
ACTing up

I thought the movie was amazing. truth be told, i never did see it as a play...and i'm sure it would be brilliant, because i fell in love with the movie.

i thought the cast was great - especially Idina Menzel as Maureen, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia was perfect (Angel).

I cried too! I thought it was really sad. But it was so totally awesome. I'm listening to it right now! Razz

I am really annoyed that the movie is not going to be out in NZ untill April!!!! I'm really dissapointed!!! I can't wait though!
mizzie

I saw it, and it was brilliant! I cried the most when it started, and during Seasons of Love. Everything but the wonderful cast was stripped away, and it truly worked. I also cried during the I'll Cover You reprise.

The cast was absolutely perfect. Anthony Rapp and Tracie Thoms definately stood out though, and I was so happy to see two old Newsies: Aaron Lohr (Mush) and Kevin Stea (Swifty). Yes, I'm a newsies fan, I'll admit it! What You Own was incredible. It's amazing how it was the same singers as on the OBC, but I thought it sounded better in the theatre, which was a horrible $4.25 ticket!

Overall, I loved it!
Vicam

Glad you liked it Smile I'm a newsies fan too and recognized Mush straight away...but who was Swifty...I didn't pick up on him at all. Maybe I need to dig out my Newsies DVD Smile
mizzie

Swifty was the Asian looking boy with curly dyed blonde hair. He appeared in all of the La Vie Boheme stuff, and is credited as "Noodles"/Bohemian." This is him in Rent:

^He's on the far left. You can't really see the Newsie in him in this shot, but it is him!
briggsgirl

i also haven't seen the stage show...but i have known all the music and been obsessed with it forever. funny how much better the songs got when i knew the plot to go with them! hehe.

anyways, i LOVED it. i cried, of course, most when angel dies. i thought it was beautiful. some of the turning song lyrics into dialouge bothered me but i didn't think it really took away from it. loved la vie boheme and tango: maureen (my two favorites before the movie) and also the life support parts were gorgeous. tracie thoms was an amazing joanne, and i liked rosario dawson too. the rest of the original cast was great too.

and another thing....completely in love with anthony rapp....too bad he's 35, and a celebrity, and gay Sad
