Who's Going To Get It?

Ugh! I am really mad. I'm auditioning for a play later this month. Don't know what it is yet. But it's at this theater place I'm going to this summer. Found out that my good friend is auditioning. Not the best voice...overdoes it if you ask me. Can't act. Great dancer. Not too big a threat if you ask me. But then, my other friend's trying out. She's from another town. Amazing voice. Okay dancer. Good actress. Her friend is auditioning and from what I've heard, she's an amazing singer. Also, my friend that is a few years older than me, decent voice, good dancer, great actress, is auditioning.

I'm scared. I myself am not one to brag. But I am a belter, I guess a good belter out of the people I listed above, excluding the girl I dont know. I'm okay at acting I guess and I love to dance, I feel comfortable dancing and whatever.

So I don't even know what show it is, but that's not the problem yet.

Kay this may be pointless but hopefully SOMEONE can help me. Pleaseeee=)

Just relax. (Almost)Every show you audition for will have stiff competition. Just tell yourself that whoever gets cast as a lead is the best for that part. You will be placed where the director sees fit. I always feel that I will be prouder of the show I'm in if everyone is cast well. Last year I was devistated that I didn't get Belle in Beauty and the Beast, but the girl who did was AMAZING and I know for a fact that I couldn't have done half as well as she did. I was cast as a Silly Girl and had a BLAST and definately would not trade that experience for anything. Whatever casting decisions are made are made for the betterment of the show(in most cases). However, there will always be those directors who are baised and play favorites.

Just remember: Everything happens for a reason. And even if you have a smaller part, you always have the opportunity to steal whatever scene you're in!

GOOD LUCK and give it your all, that's all you can do. After that, it's out of your control.

thanks=) i guess i'm being a bit selfish. i'm so used to ever show having barely any competition and now i'm all stressed out because i want to have a fun summer. but i guess whatever show we do, there will be a place for me ... because everyone gets in no matter what. i just needed to get it out

my audition song suggestion and character suggestion post will be up soon!

some of the most fun i've had in shows has been doing ensemble. leads are great, but sometimes ensemble is so much more fun.

first of all, i wouldn't exactly call the first girl your friend because you definitely don't talk about her like you respect her.

second of all, forget about 'competition' and just go out there and do your best. what happens, happens.

but with what you said about your first 'friend,' i hope she gets a better part than you so she can prove you wrong.

Well I was talking about her badly, but there are things you don't know about this girl. She is conceited to levels you wouldn't even know. I understand that maybe I sounded cocnceited too, but if you heard all of the things we've gone through ... let's just say I'd be here all day.

I don't want to go through details but basically she was not supportive of me when I began theater. She said to my face that I was not capable of ever getting a lead role, and that she expected every person on Earth to get a bigger part than me anywhere. Immature much?

Well let's just say I proved her wrong. In that audition, which was in seventh grade for Annie, I got Annie and she got the Appleseller. Nothing wrong with that part at all, but it certainly wasn't what she expected to get.

When we both auditioned for OUAM, she literally told me she wanted Aggravain but at the time I was interested in Larken, mainly because I love her song "In a Little While". I got Winnifred and she got Lady Merrill. She spoke to the director about switching her part with mine!

And then Anything Goes. She wanted Hope, I wanted Bonnie. I got Bonnie, she got Virtue, the angel. She constantly sang my part during "Heaven Hop" and she tried tripping me in the curtain call rehearsal. I'm a klutz anyway, but come on!

I wasn't with her in YAGMCB, my fourth show with a supporting lead.

I've been in other shows with her, like Annie Get Your Gun, where we were both ensemble.

I'm not saying playing Virtue, Lady Merrill, or the Appleseller need no talent. Every role requires talent. She has talent.

But I won't lie, she overdoes it.

I SHOULD NOT have said she was barely acquainted with theater, because she has been in plays.

I SHOULD NOT have said she is not a threat, because anyone is a threat and anything is possible.

I know you're probably thinking, if still reading this, that we shouldn't be friends. But our relationship is better without theater competition, and it's too good a friendship to lose over theater, in my opinion. I DO have respect for her, but I'm still hurt from all of the things she has said about me.

I'm glad you gave me a little reality check, because I needed it. I was flipping out because I have been excited about summer and wanted a good part. Which I still MIGHT get. But I know I might and probably won't get. I know I'll still have an awesome summer even if I don't get a lead. Ensemble takes a lot of talent.

I'm sorry if I sound stuck up. I don't mean to. I was very excited in a bad way after finding this out and it helps me when I write it out. I don't always mean everything, especially in a bad way. I wish I could take it back but I can't.

Like others have said, just go in there and give it your all. Deep breathe. Relax. Spazz on paper, not on the internet (something I've learned -- then you don't have to worry about what you write coming across the wrong way!). No matter what part you get, grow to love it and make it your own. I was a bit disappointed last year when I was cast as a nurse instead of Liat in my school's production of South Pacific, but I found things I liked about my part and was quite satisfied. For instance, I was the only underclassman with a named role. That worked for me.

Basically... make yourself be happy with what you get. There are always people who didn't get in at all. That whole thing sounded a bit preachy, so I apologize. Wink

well...two wrongs certainly do not make a right, dear. Wink

and also, might i add: smaller roles don't make someone a worse actor/actress. they just may fit that part better, and it happens to be smaller.

my friend is a brilliant actress and singer, and when i heard that she got the part of lady merrill in OUAM, i was mad and knew immediately that she'd been robbed of a better part.

but when i saw the show, i saw that none of the other parts were quite right for her. her role was right for her, i just wished she'd had more lines and atleast one solo.

i guess what i'm getting at here, is that maybe your friend wasn't very supportive of you, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be supportive of her. you never know - she might realize how supportive you're being and mirror it.

it's much better and much easier to be supportive of all your fellow actresses, especially if they're competition, because jealousy in the theatre is a pain in the ass for everyone.
bwaybrunette21

I guess that's true. there's ALWAYS controversy everywhere I go and I don't mean to add to it...but I do. I'll take your advice and try to be more supportive but it's hard to Confused thanks everyoen for the advice
CYTthespian

well, sorry if it seemed like i was coming down hard on you...it's just that i had to learn from that mistake the hard way, and i don't want you to have to Wink i'm not perfect, no matter how much i pretend to be.
bwaybrunette21

No, you weren't I definitely needed a reality check anyway Wink

In case anyone was wonderinggg...
The show is a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.

So it seems that you all got what you all wanted? Razz Or not? Oh, and congrats on the parts.
bwaybrunette21

Pretty much...I guess I'd rather be Pseudolus or Domina but I'm pretty happy with what I've got. I'm planning to go out there and make the best of it. We started working on my solo on Tuesday and I like how it sounds on me, and it's pretty easy to belt.

Thankkkksss!

Cool! Sounds like lots of fun! Cool
