Who played their role best in the film?OK, so this is kind of from the Chicago forum, but of course it's about the Phantom movie... who do you think played their role the best? I'm for Miranda Richardson as Mme Giry, I just think she did really well. Emmy, Gerard, and Patrick were good, but just kind of "eh," not really "wow!" (if that makes any sense... haha). I really liked Jennifer Ellison as Meg, too. |

To tell the truth, I really think that Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, Mini Driver, and Jennifer Ellison all did a great job. As for Gerard Butler... no more comments, lol!

Props to Minnie Driver. She totally owned that part.
| GlamorousGriz |
I voted for Minnie as well. I loved everone's performance, but she stood out from the rest.
| NoOneMournsTheWicked |
I voted Gerard Butler, just because he seemed to have a complete understanding of the character emotionally, and for a guy with no training, he wasn't that bad. And as for him being too young and good looking: He can't help it. He's young and he is hot...it's beyond his control.
Everyone else was great, though Emmy was a little wooden. |
||||||||
| GlamorousGriz |
Yay... I like how most of the people who voted voted for Minnie! "Si, si, ma NO, because I 'ave not my costume for act three because sambody ave not finish eet. And I 'ate my 'at-a! "
| AngMisto8182 |
I love that part! I liked her a lot better than I though I would. Too bad that's not actually her singing (except for "Learn to Be Lonely")..... well in that case she did better lip-syncing than some of the other people. Andre and Firmin come to mind... I don't remember who played them, but I didn't really like them that much... |
||||||||
| GlamorousGriz |
When I first heard that she'd been cast as Carlotta, I thoght "Ugh... good God, what the hell is wrong with them..." but after seeing the movie, I realized that I was wrong. (Well, no, after seeing her for just a few minutes) |

Ditto... after seeing her I think she was the perfect choice. |

Definitely Minnie Driver as Carlotta. I had my doubts about her when I first learned that she was going to be Carlotta (and dubbed), but she really stole the movie IMO.

Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry was the grand highlight for my part. Not only did she make the role her own, she also gave me that good ol' Phantom feeling - which none of the lead roles managed to give me.
But honourable mention to Minnie Driver, Patrick Wilson and whoever played M. Reyer. A big yawn to the managers plus Gerard Butler. A neutral face to Emmy Rossum and whoever played Piangi. Plus Jen Ellison.[/b] |

When I saw this movie (Let me tell you, I don't know much about this musical at all) I was most impressed by the actor who played Raoul. His acting was great.
| AngMisto8182 |
I'm getting rather fond of him as Raoul. When I first heard "All I Ask of You" with Emmy and Patrick without having seen the movie, I was wary (or too used to Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton... In fact, I'm really disappointed in myself because when I heard about the movie and watched the trailer and listened to song clips online, I was really against it. I couldn't even really explain why, maybe I was too dedicated |

Well, I voted for Minnie as Carlotta... she was hilarious, and I loved her bits of dialogue and all that fun Italian accent stuff. It was nice to see a halfway pretty Carlotta, too.
I am still debating Patrick vs. Steve, but I do really love Patrick Wilson... he's such a sweet Raoul! I adore Jennifer Ellison as Meg... did from the start. She's just cute as a button. And I like Miranda Richardson. AngMisto knows my less than loving feelings toward Emmy and Gerard. I'll leave it there. |
||||||||
| GlamorousGriz |
Only halfway? Damn. I've been told I look like Minnie Driver. |
||||||||
| AngMisto8182 |
haha Way to go, JemiBoe... |
||||||||
| JemiBoe1981 |
Sorry, GlamorousGriz... I am sure that you are beautiful. Minnie is pretty... I said "halfway" because most Carlottas are sows. AngMisto has Patrick Wilson's Raoul hair almost... haha... It is a tad feminine, though. I wish I looked like Patrick.
| flying_pigs |
I thought Jen Ellison did a brilliant job, I would have liked her part to have been a bit bigger but oh well!
Also, big up to Patrick and Minnie who were fantastic! As for Gerard Butler, not as good as Crawford but one of the hottest people to ever walk this earth! |
||||||||
| AngMisto8182 |
No, my hair is thicker. And darker. It's not so flat and then swoopy at the ends.... but whatever. And that would be uber cool if you looked like Patrick Wilson. And I agree with flying_pigs, I really liked Jennifer Ellison as Meg and that would've been nice if her part was a bit bigger. |
||||||||
| GlamorousGriz |
LOL. I've never heard them referred to as sows before... And thank you. |
||||||||
| Jaynie |
Gerard Butler. |
||||||||
| Pounce |
Best...Minnie Driver. She really gave life to an otherwise uninteresting character. She was such a hoot!
Worst...Gerald Butler. The film would have improved 100% if they had gotten a phantom who could sing. I'm fine with all the other actors but I don't like Joel Schumacher as a director. |
||||||||

::Tries not to be stupid fangirl:: ::can't resist:: It's Gerard Butler, not Gerald Butler. Sorry, just a pet peeve. |

Gerald.... teehee. |

Gerard was bad too. |

| Megan the Phantom Girlie |
Minnie Driver as Carlotta.
She saved the movie, in my opinion. |
||||||||
| MrsJamieWellerstein |
Minnie. Minnie Minnie Minnie. Patrick was a wuss. Gerard's voice was grating and annoying, plus he either whispered or screamed. Emmy has one facial expression. Whoever the hell it was playing Mme. Giry was good, swooping around like an overgrown bat. Whoever the hell it was playing Meg was an irritant. Piangi was an asshole, but he's supposed to be.

I don't care what you say about him (one of my best friends wasn't fond of his performance, I don't care). Just spell his name right. |

Minnie and Miranda good performances
Emmy had a sweet voice! |
||||||||
| piscesmoni |
Wow, I never knew his name was Gerard, lol.
Anyways [I'm only going to go by acting]: Gerard: Great job, acting wise. Really intense and he made me cry when he picked up that rose. Emmy: Eh. There were parts where she was mediocre, but eh. Patrick: Good, but a bit boring at times Miranda: Nicely done Minnie: Wonderful, my personal favorite Managers: Funny Piangi: Didn't really notice him...eh |
||||||||
| PAMIE |
I choose Miranda Richardson she was great I adore her French accent.
| GlamorousGriz |
I'm glad someone liked her accent... Piangi was not an asshole... he was... he was... the male Carlotta, lol. And Carlotta is awesome! |

I actually liked Jennifer Ellison as Meg. I was impressed to find out she was a classically trained ballet dancer.
| sweeteponine |
Lol, me and my friend had an amusing moment with that line. We watch the movie quite frequently and the first time we did so, in response to "I 'ate my 'at" she said "Fu**ing bitch!" Most amusing! My vote is for Minnie too! |
||||||||
| theonetowatch |
I said Miranda Richardson. She is one of my favorite actresses. I also liked Patrick Wilson, especially the voice, and Minnie Driver was funny, but out of the running in my opinion as she didn't do her own vocals. But acting wise she was very good.
Gerard Butler was okay acting-wise, but his singing was, at the very least, not opera. And don't get me started on Emmy Rossum's acting "skills". |
||||||||
| Bway_Shi |
I think that everyone did a very good job in this Movie, it was a tough choice for favourites between Minnie and Miranda, but everyone's acting was brilliant. I went with Miranda because I, too, adored her accent. I also feel that she conveyed the whole "mystery" aspect very well, to let the audience know before Raoul does that she is keeping a secret about the Opera Ghost
| le_moofin |
Patrick Wilson. Why? Because, in the movie, his acting convinced me to root for Raoul and Christine and NOT Erik and Christine. The stage-Raoul (don't remember who played him) never convinced me to think that! Patrick Wilson was the perfect Raoul because he conveyed warmth, love, and real emotion on film. In fact, sometimes I felt that the Phantom was being silly when he insulted Raoul, since those terms applied to a lesser Raoul than Patrick Wilson was portraying.
I also adored Miranda and Minnie's performances, but since both of them were partially dubbed (or is it just Minnie??) I can't give them the best. I felt that Emmy was lifeless, Gerard made chills go down my spine, the managers made me laugh, Piangi and Meg: eh, didn't really notice 'em. |

Minnie Driver was brilliant as Carlotta, but I also loved Emmy Rossum as Christine. In my opinion her voice was surprisingly awesome.
| lalala |
Minnie Driver as Carlotta - brilliant. Even if she didn't do her own singing, she really did look like she did it herself. Her characterisation was superb and she stole every scene she was in.
Miranda Richardson was also very good.. like somebody else said, she did create an air of mystery. Other than that: Emmy as Christine - meh, and one expression. Patrick as Raoul - very nice indeed, suitably sympathetic and warm Gerard as Erik - mmm.. not quite sure. I coudn't have taken a phantom seriously if he sang perfectly all the way through, but he didn't really have enough passion to make up for his somewhat erratic singing. |

It was a difficult decision, but I voted for Miranda Richardson. I loved her Mme Giry -- such a wonderful air of mystery and intrigue about her. At times she seemed to be an almost darker character than the Phantom, which gets serious thumbs up from me. I'm still not entirely sure whose side she was on.
As for the others ... Minnie Driver: Absolutely awesome! When it comes down to picking my favourite actress in this movie, it's always so difficult to decide between her and Miranda. So completely over-the-top and melodramatic and diva-ish ... so completely Carlotta. Gerard Butler: Acting-wise, I thought he was great. Dang, he broke my heart ... Singing-wise, I'm sort of well, meh. Not fantastic, not total rubbish ... not really my cup of tea, though. Emmy Rossum: Did. Not. Like. At. All. I found her acting very bland and predictable and the general lack of facial expression got to me. As for her singing, I was sorely disappointed ... and that's a whole separate rant. Patrick Wilson: I really liked his voice -- I'd probably say it was the best out of the cast (and definitely out of the three leads). As for his acting, I don't really have any strong opinions about it. |

Gerard Butler: Acting-wise, I thought he was great. Dang, he broke my heart ... Singing-wise, I'm sort of well, meh. another vote for Minnie here.
I thought she was fabulous. and original. |

Miranda Richardson - she's incredible!
| abandoned_memory |
Deffinately Gerard Butler.
His acting was incredible, even though he lacked in the singing. However, Emmy's acting and singing is completely horrid, so I don't see why anyone voted for her. Her lower register is fine, but she scoops and chokes on the high notes. And she went through the movie with one expression on her face, and her mouth gaping open in every scene. She so did not deserve to win an award for playing a deer-in-the-headlights. |

I would definitely have to say Minnie Driver as Carlotta. Her performance was absolutely hilarious, and brought some good comic relief to the movie.
| Mistress |
Agreed. vocally he's the worst pahntom...but it's not fair to compare him to all those trained stage phantoms. However I enjoyed his acting. For me, I felt that he was trying his best to overcome his vocal problems. somethimes his voice did work, for certain scenes. I actually really enjoyed his "Stranger Than You Dreamt It". The mix between his heartbreaking acting and gravelly voice made for a perfect scene. Emmy was a little too much Sarah Brightman in the acting, and her voice either wasn't trained enough, or wasn't the right range for the part. It was still pretty in itslef, though. Patrick's Raoul was actually pretty decent considering how easy it is to turn the character into a fop. I liked Simon Callow's Andre...spot on...but Ciaran Hinds partially ruined Notes/Prima Donna for me. His Firmin was much too gravelly in the vocals. That combined with the massive libretto changes really threw me off..it's one of my least favourite scenes actually. Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson are my true favourites, though. They both really sunk their teeth in their roles and clearly had fun doing it. |

Minnie Driver.. i simply loved her accent.. especially when she says " alora lora, get me my doggie" and " until theses things stop happening, this thing does not happen" or something to that effect
| BoundBySound |
Haha yes! Those are two of my favorite lines in the show! Sad, isn't it...? |

I loved Gerard Butler, thought he was great. Not in a millioin years would I have chosen Raoul over him!!!
| Paula74 |
I have to say Patrick Wilson. I don't like the way Raoul's character was written for the screenplay (and his wig was horrid), but he did a fine job with what he had to work with.
Emmy...she seems like a sweet girl, especially from a couple of firsthand accounts I've heard, but her voice was dull and her acting worse. Gerard...I really admire him as an actor (he was superb in "Dear Frankie" and I always look forward to his projects), but he was horribly miscast...especially for singing. |
||||||||
| Belle Daae |
Definately Minnie! She played the character great, even if she didn't sing!
I think that Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum did good too, but to me their singing wasn't as good as other Phantoms/ Christines that I've heard. |
||||||||
| Brigantine |
I was enchanted with Miranda Richardson. Minnie did a great job with the character. GeraRd... I wasn't sure what to think at first but there is no way I would have chosen Raoul over the Phantom. Raoul is a total pansy in the movie. I thought at first it was Patrick Wilson, but after hearing him on the Full Monty CD (fabulous!), I came to the conclusion that it had to be the screenplay/directing that made him so... blechh. Too cocky, too... I dunno. I HATE the way he laughs at Christine, I think she is in her dressing room and he is trying to get her to go out and she says she can't... Ooohhh... that laugh bugs me! I would have let him hang! So, sorry I turned it into a what I didn't like, but I liked Gerry's acting with the part and some of the singing, and Miranda and Jennifer. Agree with previous posts about Emmy's blah everything. I had such high hopes for her, they really played up her 'opera' experience in the pre-release hype, and I thought we were going to get a real opera sound in a beautiful porcelain package... but... it was just OK. I really like the DVD extras and hearing about Jennifer's struggle with a bland English accent, since her natural one is SO strong. |
||||||||
| FlamingGiraffes |
Normally I would have said Minnie, but she did not sing in the movie. Miranda on the other hand, was really amazing. She kept my attention, and I really love how she sings, "And what a masquerade." |
