In the Broadway version of the show, Nikolai is a KGB man and Molokov's assistant. He appears early in the show to deliver information on Florence to Molokov. He has a small appearance before and during the defection sequence late in Act I. He reappears in a scene between Anatoly, Svetlana and Molokov in Act II and has a small interaction with Florence in the next scene. He appears to lead Svetlana away after "I Know Him So Well," and leads Florence to her (fake) father before "Lullabye".
Nikolai is usually played by a member of the ensemble, and has the largest of the minor roles in the cast. He has a small sung part in the first portion of "Endgame" (the lines usually sung by Molokov). According to IBDB, the part was originated on Broadway by Kurt Johns.
In the US Tour, Nikolai had a smaller part, but was made a chess fan. He approaches Anatoly about a game, and gets an autograph from Freddie. Nikolai has not appeared in other major versions of the show.
