White Dress Difficulties

My school doesn't have a costume department, we're responsible for costuming ourselves. I have some stuff picked out for WSS, like my outfit for Act 2, Scene 1, but my one issue is my white dress. I'm seriously short on money, so I've been looking in stores like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe to find something that I could sew a red sash on and make it my white dress.

So, my question is: Has anyone seen anything online that would be a suitable white dress?

Have you tried thrift stores and such?
Nedame

go to less expensive stores if you're short of money, plus then you can get stuff and cut it and sew it together and such.

Goodwill and Salvation Army are every costumer's best friend!

I got my white dress!

Old Navy kids section. It was $23, but my school will pay me back.

Your school doesn't have a costume department? That's lame. I mean, my little rinky-dink high school even had a costume department (although we ended up borrowing a ton of things for our production of WSS).

At least you got your dress! Very Happy

Although your school really should look into getting itself a costume department - no matter how small or large.

Our school has no support for the musical. We're really lucky we're getting sets this year, but the teacher in charge of tech is really nice and is doing a really great job.

I'm actually almost done costuming myself. I'm wearing a lot of white, one black sparkly skirt and (if I can find it) a red dress similar to what Natalie Wood wore for my final scene. I just need a few more things and then I'm done. Then I have to help my Tony costume his self...cause he's male, and cannot shop for himself.

So true, so true! I need a white blousy thing for a pirate costume, so I found a really cheap one there. And since it was cheap I didn't feel so bad ripping holes in it and making a bloody stain and rubbing mud all over it. (We had to be very dirty pirates. But that's a different story.)
crluvalotbear

ahaha what pirate show are you doing??

It was called "The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree" from Pioneer Drama. Not a "real" musical, but it was appropriate for jr. high and still was a lot of fun!

So here is a total run down of my costumes (sorry, no pics yet. My boyfriend has my camera)

Dress shop/Dance at the Gym:
White dress, red ribbon sash and red heels or flats (I'm debating. Would Maria wear heels?)

Tonight (Balcony):
Peach Bathrobe (kind of modern looking) and grey flats over white dress.

Dress Shop (One Hand, One Heart)/ Quintet:
White skirt, white 3/4 sleeve peasant top, belt and matching flats.

I Feel Pretty:
Same white 3/4 sleeve peasant top, black skirt with sequins on it, black heels.

Finale:
Red skirt, short sleeve white peasant top, red flats.

Sound good? I'm hoping to get pictures up by the end of the week.

Our school is really similar, we only have a few costumes, and mostly we have to costume ourselves (with the help of Mrs Saben who comes in just to help with our drama, plus Mrs Allen our drama teacher) (Mrs Saben is awesome though, she buys and makes all sorts of costumes for us, we wouldn't be able to get costumes for our shows without her) and the only sets we get are made by the tech-ed teacher, which worked really well this year because we had one less special/unified arts class, so you get like 6 days of every ua class again, and he used those 6 days from everyone to build the sets...
