Which Show Is the Best?

I found out possibilities for my junior year high school musical because I'm the secretary of our drama club. It's in the late fall because we have a musical revue in June, so our show is I think in December or November. Auditions = August. So I'm a bit early. Better early than late I guess.

The options include:

+ Bye Bye Birdie
+ My Fair Lady
+ 42nd Street
+ and Guys and Dolls

But I don't think it's Bye Bye Birdie - I think our middle school is doing that (Which means my little sister will go crazy - loves the show and is in middle school). Anyway, it could be though.

To me, 42nd Street sounds the most fun.

But just wondering if there's a different one I should convince the directors to do.

Which is the most fun?

of those, guys and dolls is my favorite, but those are all shows that are done regularly at high schools and kind of lackluster if you ask me.

Honestly, I would usually say MFL, but in a high school situation, with so many talented girls and only a few great roles in that show...I wouldn't readily recommend it for high school because of that...

Guys and Dolls would be good for everyone. The girls would have a lot of fun stuff to do...the guys would have a lot of fun stuff to do...and they don't have to be amazing dancers...

42nd Street...my thoughts on this are that there's such a history to that show. People expect the original choreography, which I doubt a high school ensemble could pull off...A lot of people consider it blasphemy if certain things in that show aren't done "just so"...And think of the production costs! OUCH!

Just my two cents...

Thanks, I'm glad I have your opinion.

I'm researching My Fair Lady right now, and I see that the lead is Eliza, but there's not much for girls to do asidee from be in the ensemble or other small parts.

I'm going to suggest 42nd Street and Guys and Dolls because we already have amazing dancers - this I know for sure. Many of the members are competition dancers or take some form of dance. Even I do.

I don't know anything about Guys and Dolls except for the fact that I looooove Adelaide's and Sarah's songs. And Adelaide is one of my dream roles because I love the character.

But though I don't know the show well, i'm going to suggest it because we need something for many girls to be in.

Thanks!

Oh sorry I didn't see your post.

Yeah they're far from original - but I don't really mind. I suppose we should do something different when I'm a senior in fall 07, but oh well.

My only other concern is your budget...42nd Street will clean you out! The costumes alone are overwhelming! Imagine each chorus member having about 11 changes! (If I remember correctly...It may have been 14)

Just a thought...

I think that Guys and Dolls will be the most fun out of those 4. Very Happy If not, then Bye Bye Birdie is a second choice!

Have fun with it Wink

guys and dolls in my opinion

Guys and Dolls is definately a fun show. I have always wanted to be Sarah.
42nd Street is great if, and only if, you have great dancers or have people who can learned advanced dance fast! Otherwise it looks sloppy and unprofessional. You can't just have them do jazz squares the whole time Laughing
You sound like you don't want to do Bye Bye Birdie. Between you and me, I do not like this show.
My Fair Lady is only good if you have chemistry (or can fake it) between Eliza and, oh I forget his name. The lead guy. Otherwise it just goes down the drain.

My vote is for My Fair Lady. It's a difficult show, but if pulled off well, it can be dazzling. mtgirl118, I think you're thinking of Professor Higgins. Yes, make sure you have an actor who can play him well. Bye Bye Birdie is fun, but lame and overdone.

Thanks for all the opinions!

My personal pick is still 42nd Street because we have a great amount of talented dancers and a huge group - there's a lot of parts. Guys and Dolls is my second choice, based on your comments.

I think Bye Bye Birdie is the middle school show, so that's pretty much not an option.

And I don't think we're going to do My Fair Lady because there's a great amount of girls and it seems like Eliza is high above the other female characters.

But I could be wrong.

Thanks again for the opinions!

Nope...your absolutely correct! Nothing creates more animosity among high school girls than MFL! LOL!

My little sis got the part of Eliza and literally had to SHARE it with someone else because a bunch of the seniors (she was a junior at the time) demanded that a senior do the role and the director decided to let them share it...(I'm not being biased here, but my little sis was WAY better...People who had heard that the Eliza was good on Opening Night came to see it the next night and literally said they were disappointed!)

So yeah...If you want one girl to be hated for a few months, pick MFL!

It's a great show, but honestly, for high school purposes, I would steer clear of it! Also, you need to make sure that people can do good Standard British/Cockney accents...

plus My Fair Lady is hard to pull off anywhere..especailly High School without a strong lead..and there arent many high school boys who can ace the role of Henry Higins.

Thank you. That is who I meant. I was having a mind block.

It seems that this is the unpopular vote, but I would have to say Bye Bye Birdie
A Wop Bam Boom!

We did MFL at my middle school about 5 years ago i played mrs higging and our Henry Higgins and professor pickering were really good so we managed to pull it off but id go with 42nd street! The songs are amazing sos the dance its and allrounder! I love young and Healthy! Definatly 42nd street!
bwaybrunette21

We're doing 42nd Street.

Bye Bye Birdie is one of the middle school shows.
MFL was ruled out because there's arguably not many parts.
Guys and Dolls ... I don't know why we didn't do it but I do kind of wish we did it so I could audition for Adelaide. Or Sarah. I don't know.

I'm posting an audition thing for it soon.

Thanks for the opinions though. I voted for 42nd Street and Guys and Dolls. In the end, I don't know which show had the most votes but I think that was just to give the director an idea of which show wasn't wanted.

hey, i just noticed that you are lycus and tintinabula in forum. i remember your forum post before, and i'm just wondering how that works for you. are you playing lycus one night and tintinabula another?
bwaybrunette21

Yeah lol. I didn't think of how it would look to people that don't know that detail. That would be really messed up if I was both all shows.
Ep-Griz-Reno

I've always had a soft spot for Guys and Dolls =)
