Which recording?I've decided that my life is incomplete because I don't own a JCS cast recording (or soundtrack). Out of the many many that exist, which one or two would you recommend?

London Revival cast with Steve Balsamo and Zubin Varla. All in All best singers and performers! It's like the original concept but with people who actually sing! Second best is the movie which is different then the concept or the other cd I just mentioned. And Carl is legend as judas. The only other one worth mentioning is the broadway/new movie soundtrack, but it's an incomplete wannabe of the london revival and it's better to spend your money on that movie as opposed to that cd. that's just my 2 cents on the subject.

It depends on what you want. If you want the recording which best represents the music...then the Original Concept Album is the only way to go. If you want the definitive album performance wise, the Original film soundtrack is probably the best bet. (The one featuring Carl and Ted, not the 2000 travesty.) A more traditional "Musical Theatre" person would likely prefer the 1996 Lyceum, or the Bad Hershfield cast. If you're interested in unique, entertaining music (vastly original orchestrations) and some mind blowing vocals then the 1992 Australian Version would do ya. The 1971 Broadway cast is quite good, and offers fantastic performances by Ben Vereen and Jeff Fenholt. It is also "The Orignal Broadway Cast" which is important to some. The Italian recordings are interesting, as are the Russian, Icelandic and Hungarian, but are more likely to be enjoyed by collectors or enthusiests of the show.
Personally I adore the 1973 Film soundtrack. I think Carl Anderson is mind blowing, and Ted Neeley the perfect Jesus. But there are well over 100 different OFFICAL recordings of the music. JCS Surferstar, and This Jesus Must Die (a punk album...terribly bad) to name some of the more obscure ones. There are many many choices...but I would reccomend staying with the holy trinity (forgive the pun) The Concept album (The Father) The Original Broadway Cast (The Son) And the Film Soundtrack (The Holy Spirit). These are the three that truely caputre the spirit of the show, and the era in which it was created...the most accurate representation of what Jesus Christ Superstar is.

I really love the OBC even though its only selections. the cast is perfect. Barry Dennen is at the top of his form. Ben Vereen is the perfect judas.

I agree. Dennen's performance is much better on this album then in the 73 movie.

For first timers, I'd get either the 73 Movie or the Concept Album (for rock fans), or the 96 Lyceum Cast (for Musical Theater fans).

i'd still get the 96 one for rock fans. Zubin as Judas really rocks the songs, better than Murray. Murray just made his voice weak and then ruined it completely when he did Chess. Ian Gillan is okay, very rock like scream and Deep Purple fans will really like him, but Steve Balsamo as the amazing 30 second, very pure scream. So actually your rock vs. musical theatre is kind of based on the Jesus, who doesn't sing as much as Judas.

B.S. The orchestrations and overall PRODUCTION QUALITY of the recording are VERY polished and music-theatre-esque. Nothing to do with the voice. Zubin's voice isn't anywhere near as emotional or interesting as Murray's or Anderson's, and if you didn't know, by the end of the run he couldn't sing the score at all. He cracked his way through it, so I guess he did the same thing Head did, only over the span of one show, instead of two.
Balsamo of all the times I saw his live, never once held the G for the entire 5/8 break. He does on the recording, but it's hardly impressive. More grating than anything.
The 1996 recording is devoid of the spirit of the show. Something which is an intergral part of the show, and very much present in the recordings from the 1970's. Rock fans don't enjoy the 1996 album, at least in my experience. The 1970's recordings are superior in almost every way.

Valid argument, though Zubin also did Chess, so same thing. Though this is more of an argument of recordings and as I recall the orginal london cast was not the concept cast so Murray only recorded the songs. I do have to argue though that to get the real spirit of the show, you need the whole show, which is why I think the broadway cast isn't the best way to go and my holy trinity would be concept (father) Movie With Carl and Ted (son) 1996 london (holy Spirit)

LOL! I definitley do NOT think the 1996 london is for rock fans! That one is WAY too polished and is a fake sugar coated theater fake "rock" album. Go with the 1970 Concept album.

It's a bootleg, and it kinda sucks.
As for Balsamo....
He's decent...but nothing really special. Ian Gillian still beats him, but there are loads of other Jesus' who are much better than Gillian.

Stigwood? Nah he ain't dead. He's in retirement. He hasn't produced new, as in really new, projects for a while. His last was the musical of "Saturday Night Fever," a D.O.A.

Stugwood produced TOMMY THE MOVIE. Ken Russel (a brilliant director, and psycopahthic Santa Claus) directed it.
I enjoyed the film, but then again, I'm insane.

That movie made me sick. The only good part was the Acid Queen...
Cousin Kevin and Uncle Ernie (Fiddle About) was good, too.
Other than that, the plot was impossible to follow, and the camera was a mess.
