Which Recording?

Which recording or soundtrack of Gypsy would you recommend I purchase? I've never seen the stage show, but I've recently seen the movie starring Bette Midler and I would like to add Gypsy to my growing collection of musicals. So, any help would be greatly appreciated! Very Happy

I personally enjoy the newest recording with Bernadette Peters.

I own all recordings of Gypsy

My favorite is also the recent revival with Bernadette, but they're all good for their own merit.

Bernadette's just seems to have the strongest cast overall and all the music is really crisp and very easy to listen to, as well as adding some additional songs you don't get on other recordings.

Alright, I think I'll go with that recording then! Thanks for your help!

Bernadette is the worst mama rose of the bunch..I adore her normally...but she is miscast in the part.

the finest Rose is Angela LAnsbury..the woman credited with making the role her own. plus she has a brilliant supportingh cast.

start with Lansbury then get the OBC with Merman.

I'll check those out too.

Just don't get the Tyne Daly version, or you will want to kill yourself because it's bloody horrible.

oh please the Tyne Daley recording is good as well. She won a well deserved Tony for her mama Rose. she and lansbury were the only two do to do so.

She sounds HORRIBLE on the recording.

I don't understand why they still made her record when she was sick

I'll vote for Angela Lansbury at this point; I sincerely hope that Patti's Rose will be available sometime soon.

Angela's version is terrific. More complete than the OBC.

Ethel's is marvelous. Nothing like hearing the originators of the roles.

Patti LuPone live was a highlight of my entire year! Saw it twice! Hopefully there will be a "legal" recording made.

Bette & Tyne are weaker vocally, Bernadette was a mixed bag for most folks but I rather enjoyed her on stage, haven't really listened to her version on CD much.

Betty Buckley was an interesting "Rose" at Papermill Playhouse, but went unrecorded.

Worst I've heard is the Kaye Medford studio recording. Just not in her limited range.

Just got the South African recording, recorded in 1976. Really well done version of the show.

Also have the show in about 6 international casts, in six different languages.

It's a great score, in any variation.
